I like the oldie but goldie, Silent Service, a Sid Meier/Microprose game. I doubt it works on anything modern, but I played that right down to the nub.

Red Storm Rising was a lot of fun, too.

688(I), Sub Command, and Dangerous Waters (sort of a spiritually linked series, all by the same developer) are the three definitive modern sub sims. No one else comes close.

There was also a sim back in the 2010's that had subs and frigates (IIRC) in a hypothetical war based on an alt WW2 involving some kind of Euro alliance v a Pacific power and perhaps the US? I don't recall the details but I'm sure I have a digital copy in one of the online game repositories.

Interesting, don't recall that one, would be interested in it's name. There was Enigma: Rising Tide that was alternative WW2 but I don't think that was it since seems to deal with Germany and was released around 2003.

That was it, and I'm just misremembering the factions and release date (20 years ago!). It does have a Japanese/English alliance though. I had tried to find it on mobygames but struck out, not knowing the title. No luck figuring out what online store library I have it in either.

Maybe back then you actually owned on a cd as online stores weren't as popular yet. I see it available at Amazon and such for a physical copy.
