My father used to tie a string around them until they turned black and fell off.  I told my dermatologist that and he thought for a second and then said "That would work".

I made two gallons of sweet pickles today, in two separate one gallon Jars. Buy two gallons of whole dill pickles. Empty out the pickles, drain, slice and then put back into the jars. Dump 5# of sugar into each jar. I also add three or 4 jalapenos to each as well, for some bite. Date the jars and set aside for two months plus. Longer is better.

Post script - unless you are actually jarring the sweet pickles, you should probably keep them in the fridge until ready to eat. I have several older ladies giving me contradictory info on that, but I have always refridgerated them as I seldom do the whole jarring thing.
