You're really taking me back with the keyboard overlay  :Dreamer:

And dare I say that those screens for Gunship2000 look pretty good.

Jane's Longbow is only helicopter sim I played (or at least remember playing :buck2:).  I wonder if anyone got that to run on modern systems?

Here's a tutorial with links in the video description from damsonn on YouTube. He launches the game at 5:27.

I fired GS2000 up again for a couple missions today. It certainly is more game than sim, but a game full of interesting decisions and tactics.

I enjoy the loop of...
Read the mission brief.
Evaluate the S-2 report.
Analyze the terrain map.
Allocate mission platforms and weapons.
Plan movement (sometimes to contact, sometimes evasive) to a rally point before reaching the objective area.
Complete the mission.
Use FARP resources or RTB.
Evaluate mission effectiveness.
Promote and award personnel.
Repeat.

Often flying at about 120 feet altitude and at about 100 knots using terrain masking makes the most sense when in transit to the objective. Search and destroy/rescue taskings require you to get some eyes up in the sky at higher altitudes, preferably near hills so you can evade quickly if necessary. Other times when contact is imminent low and slow at 60 feet and 60 knots is better. It really depends on your helicopter, weapons loadout, mission, and expected threats on the battlefield.

The Apaches, especially Longbows, with Hellfires can reach out and touch anything. The Super Cobras are mid yet capable. Kiowas are nimble scouts. The AH-6/MD-500s fill a similar role, but can ill afford attacking anything outside the objective. Comanches can fill the assault, standoff, and scout roles. Of course, the Blackhawks are best for personnel recovery, troop transport, and cargo transport.

On one mission I flew today I decided to take the MD-500 out alone with four TOWs and it's point and shoot 7.62 mm mini-gun. The primary target was a reinforced T-80 platoon. The main challenge was evading and hiding from enemy air defenses and other enemy units until I arrived at the engagement point I'd selected.

About three quarters to the primary objective, an enemy APC defending on a reverse slope surprised me at about half a kilometer. I didn't want to waste one of the TOWs so I gave it a few spits with the 7.62, which did no damage of course, and then quickly darted behind a ridge line to plan a new transit route to the engagement point.

Pausing to do a bit of pop up recon or ordering your scouts to do it is an important part of tactical awareness in GS2000. Also, learning when to engage targets with the best weapon at the best distance is also important. As is the cat and mouse skill of IR and radar guided missle evasion. I fly the helicopter and shoot the weapons, but I usually let the gunner handle countermeasures.

I wouldn't buy these versions. They are the ones that the new publisher famously downloaded from a pirate site and then started reselling with some guy's save games and high scores still intact.

Nonon they've been fixed!! They listened to us yelling at them and fixed them so now they're good and clean. Definitely worth buying now.

The fact that they did it once is bad enough that I don't want to reward them with cash.

Fine, buy it from this guy, then:

He mails you an original game CD-ROM plus a custom installer on another CD-ROM, and he can provide a download to the installer as well if you don't have an optical drive. It's a fantastic service.
