How are you liking the game? I've got a review code but haven't installed it - it doesn't look like my kind of game. Can you sell me on the good points?

played it about 8 years ago and disappeared off the face of the planet for a week, thats when the worse that happened was lava - having read up on it a while ago whilst researching a city/economy builder im thinking of jumping back in this weekend

I've been playing a healthy dose and started to do a getting started guide because I know how daunting it is at first..... in terms of content the game is unmatched.

I love it... but I haven't played in a LOOOONG time.

I did get pulled away a bit by the alpha tests of Towns and Gnomoria, both of which scratch the same itch but have much better UI.

I certainly have played and enjoyed learning to play DF.
It's a unique game.
Not played for quite a while now. Mainly because I have been busy with other games.
But it certainly is one of the games I would recommend!

Has anyone played the Gnomoria beta lately?

It's a graphical version of Dwarf Fortress, so it's easier on the eyes.  I picked it up awhile back, and only played long enough to see that the interface is obviously an improvement.  But I've been busy with other stuff, so haven't given it an honest go.

I've been dabbling off and on with DF for a while now... having to re-learn interface skills everytime.. it's certainly not intuitive.

Currently reading the book: Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress by Peter Tyson (tinypirate)

Still taking baby steps through it, but everytime I come back to it, I get it a little more. :)

There was a decent podcast with DF's developer Tarn Adams the other week over at Roguelike Radio. Worth a listen.

I dunno just how deep it goes, but you'll immediately notice how extremely DF-like it is. 

I'll never be able to say for sure because I've not played DF very long.  The interface and ASCII-ness of it annoyed me enough to give up fighting it before long.  This one, however, seems very easy to approach and the gameplay is almost exactly like DF.  Thank you mouse-click interface!

I've read Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress by Peter Tyson and it is a very good book.  I believe that the time spent invested into Dwarf Fortress is worth it because of the depth and sheer content and the many stories you come away with on how your fortress and dwarves died. 

I would highly suggest using the Lazy Newb Pack and within it is a program called Dwarf Therapist.  It is a graphical and very easy way of managing your Dwarves task and professions (it really cuts down on a lot of work).  You can make changes in real time.  I also use Ironhand's tile set which helps with the visual presentation of DF.


Gnomoria
I have played Gnomoria and it is a a graphical DF style game with a lot of the same features.  One things that DF does is build your world and the history and lore which you can read and intersects with the game.  I believe Gnomoria has been Greenlit on Steam but you can pick up through Desura in its Alpha state for $7.99.  I prefer DF, but it has been in development for 10+ years and Gnomoria is still having features added to it... I did like what I saw from Gnomoria and will probably pick it up.
