For 105 days, the tiny nation of Finland fought a war that typically merits only a footnote in the history books, or a passing remark in a WW2 documentaries. Taking on the vast manpower of the Soviet army, the Finns put up a fanatical defense of their homeland, inflicting horrific casualties on the invading Soviet army. In the end, the overwhelming number of Soviet troops and tanks sent into Finland forced the Finns to sue for peace, but they walked away from the conflict with their much bigger neighbor with their independence and national pride intact. Their struggle influenced the landscape and direction of the entire World War that followed--and perhaps the outcome as well.

Continuing the winter theme as the Northern hemisphere shivers through the winter, we have decided that this week's Game of the Week is Panzer Campaigns: Bulge '44. The Battle of the Bulge (Operation Wacht am Rhein) covers the last-ditch attack by heavy German units hoping to recreate the successes of 1940, but was to result in further attrition of the overall Axis strength. For the Allies, it was a wake-up call. The resilience of the Germans genuinely surprised them, and it was an indication that more hard fighting would be needed to conclude the war.

This week's Game of the Week is Panzer Campaigns: Kharkov '43. The third battle of Kharkov raged from February 2nd to March 18th, 1943, concluding 82 years ago, last week, so it is fitting to highlight this title.

Kharkov '43 covers one of the great turnarounds on the Eastern Front. Flushed with the success of the victory at Stalingrad, Stavka launched Operation Gallop/Star on the day the Paulus surrendered 6th Army in ignominy. The Soviet operation was hurriedly pulled together from the march to take advantage of the perceived disarray of the Axis forces. The Soviet operations were almost completely successful in capturing Kharkov and reaching the Dnepr River. Confronted with an unprecedented Soviet breakthrough, Manstein pulled off one of the greatest military reversals by launching a counter offensive that destroyed the bulk of South Western Front and then wrested both Kharkov & Belgorod off Voronezh Front. Even more amazing is the fact this was achieved with minimal new forces, but rather formations that had been engaged in combat for months.

The Peninsular War was one of the longest and most drawn-out campaigns of the Napoleonic War; a piece of Imperial regime change designed to close off the last European ports open to British trade, which instead developed into the "Spanish Ulcer" that sapped the strength of Napoleon's empire and left him to fight a two-front war that would ultimately destroy him.

This week's Game of the Week is Panzer Campaigns: Spring Awakening '45. We published this title in March 2024, and this will be the first time we have made it available at a discounted price. This final German offensive was fought from March 6th to March 15th, 1945, 80 years ago, so it is a fitting time to highlight this title.

By the latter part of 1861, the divided nation was beginning to understand that this new war would be a long and bloody fight. In the east, the Union advance into Virginia was soundly defeated at Bull Run (Manassas). Washington was eager for some good news that would encourage the people to stay the course and reunite the nation, no matter what the cost. Soon, a little known general would give the North the encouragement it so badly needed.

This week's Game of the Week is John Tiller's first independent game, Panzer Campaigns: Smolensk '41. Smolensk '41 has aged well with multiple updates for both game system and game play over the years. It has also been mentioned as one of the more dynamic titles for both maneuver and action in the Panzer Campaigns series.

After Korea, America was organized, trained and equipped to deter and, if necessary, to fight a global thermonuclear conflict against the Soviet Union.
