Anybody checked out this mod for GTA V called "Los Santos Red?"

If you guys have been keeping up with the Vietnam War thread, this mod is basically that same approach but to GTA V.  It's a full on crime simulator where you can be a gangster, a civilian, a cop, an EMS, a firefighter, or what have you.  It's got a robust crime system that simulates everything from traffic laws to drug dealing to gang wars and law enforcement, letting you be either the good guy or the bad guy.

What's really cool is that this mode makes the game into a full-on RPG where you have to take care of yourself, buy property, maintain your cars, and generally try to get by.  It's basically what I always felt GTA Free Roam should have been.  From what I can tell, the peds are all actual simulated NPCs with names who you can build (or destroy) relationships with.

The installation is pretty straightforward and involves downloading a few plugin files, but it took me a bit of fiddling to get it to work right.  A few tips:

1. In step 1 of the installation, you HAVE to get the Rage Plugin Hook from their Discord.  For whatever reason, the one on their website hasn't been updated in years, and won't work.
2. In the game menu, if you see "Story mode" instead of "Story mode with RagePluginHook", try launching Rage Plugin Hook in administrator mode

For my first character, I decided to make a scumbag criminal who's not currently affiliated with any of the gangs in Los Santos.  His randomly generated name is Marco Williams, and he has a valid driver's license and no warrants for his arrest (yet).  And according to my stats sheet, he doesn't have a CCW or a Pilot's license, which are both things you can get.  :notworthy:

Here he is with a car that he managed to steal when a gang shootout broke out down the street, causing everyone to flee.  What a convenient opportunity for an unnoticed crime!  Funnily enough, this car had a smoke grenade and a screwdriver in its glove box for some reason.

My first order of business was to secure a firearm.  This menu is just the pistols available at this one back-alley store, to give you an idea of what's available in this mod:

Now Marco's ready for business!  Luckily, the car he stole had a full tank of gas, so he's got nothing but time on his hands and opportunity in his eyes.  For now, he's going to roam around and find unattended cars and jack whatever money, weapons, or items might be left inside.  I found some baking soda, so presumably that means I can cook up drugs later down the line when I have a property.

Lucky me, I found an empty alley with a Prius and a news van, out of which I managed to quietly steal a few hundred bucks and some cigarettes.

I was waiting for a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.

Had my first run-in with Johnny Law.  I decided to "FOFA" as the kids say, so when I spotted a nice car in an underpass, I figured Marco should spring into action.  He turned his stolen car to block the road, then hopped out and pointed his stolen revolver at the driver of the car.  Unfortunately it turned out these guys were gang members, so they both immediately started shooting at me.  I killed them both, but their car was full of bullet holes with broken windows, so I couldn't escape with it without drawing attention.  So I grabbed the money from their car and took off in mine, which miraculously avoided taking any shots.

Well, things went south and it was completely my fault.  The cops got called because of the firefight, and I thought they were onto me, so I sped out of the area.... only to get spotted by a cop for felony speeding.  Naturally I couldn't stop then, so this resulted in a high-speed chase that took me down to the docks of Los Santos, where I dumped my car in the water and tried to hide out my wanted level.  But they put a BOLO out on me, so my face was basically all over the news.  Not much I could do with discretion around here, plus several bullet holes in my torso making it hard for me to stay on my feet, so I turned myself in.

Ironically, I never got charged with the two murders -- only evading arrest, speeding, and crashing into a car on my way out.  So I paid $4k bail, lost all my guns, and now I'm back on the street with full health again.

I forgot to get screenshots of the attempted carjacking gone wrong, but here's the aftermath:

One thing that's great about this mod is how the police use a reasonable escalation of force.  Unlike GTA V vanilla where they fill you full of holes for the slightest offense, the cops in this mod won't shoot until they have to, and otherwise will try to tase you and bring you into custody.

EDIT - Shortly after being released from jail, I learned not to try and jack a car in the hood in plain sight of everyone..... A bunch of gang members immediately tried to perforate me, but luckily the cops came and blasted them all.  I was long gone by then.

This looks great. Did you ever play the LSPD mod? How does it compare to that?

I take it "ped" isn't the contraction I'm assuming it is?

I haven't actually - this is my first go at modding GTA V.  From what I can tell, the LSPD mod is very similar, but this one has a more general RP focus rather than being specifically focused on playing LEO.  I would guess the LSPD mod is probably more in depth for playing a cop, but I'm not totally sure.

LOL.  In the GTA games, "ped" is short for "pedestrian" which basically means NPC.

All right, after playing more thoroughly, it looks like the LE/fire/EMT stuff is pretty Work in Progress.  Right now the focus of the mod is definitely on crime and gang wars, so the LSPD mod is the way to go if you want to play the good guy.

This got me back into playing LSPDFR. Man, it is almost a DCS level police simulator at this point. Really amazing what modders have managed to accomplish with this engine.

Is that as simple as get gta 5 and install the lspdfr mod or is there a lot of fannying around

Unfortunately, in order to get the most out of it, there is a lot of downloading individual mods, installing in various ways and configuring keys with .ini files. It is not overly difficult, but it is time consuming. You can certainly play LSPDFR vanilla, but it gets pretty boring fast. You need to mod it with additional features, functions, gear, vehicles and callouts. The more you add, the more interesting it gets. I found a very good guide series here:

This is what's the most amazing and simultaneously infuriating about Rockstar.  Their game worlds are so immense and detailed that they're the perfect playground for serious in-depth simming and RPing, but since they're chasing that mainstream gamer buck, they settle for the gameplay being "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" arcadey sandbox stuff with hints at the much cooler and more immersive game that could have been.

Not only that, but Rockstar actively tries to prevent modding. If you go online with modded files, there is a very strong chance that your account will be banned. It is important that when you load LSPDFR that you go to Story Mode with Rage Hook and that you don't play GTA online or adversary mode, etc.

In any event, I literally spent most of the long weekend modding LSPDFR by adding various mods, scripts, effects, vehicles, etc. It is really amazing what the mods can do. They really bring LSPDFR to a next level and the more you mod it, the more immersive and fun it can be.  However, it does take a tremendous amount of work to get everything in there, and as I said above, although it is not overly difficult, there are a number of different steps to take for the various mods. Some simply get dragged into the root directory, others need to be installed with a third-party application called OpenIV and while others still need to have lines added to .ini files. Again, not overly difficult with the right instruction, but easy to screw up if all steps aren't followed.

The five part video guide I posted above is really exceptional and really all anyone should need to get set up with the most essential list of mods.

Should be tackling it this week - do you have more mods than in the video
