Been watching this for a while and now there is a demo with the full game releasing in July.
The game is like homeworld and is by the homeworld mod team that brought us "homeworld complex".

The demo so far is great fun. Making me expand and extend my base with new modules and connecting pipes. I had to put an engine on my base to move it. Also had to put solar panels on it and face them towards the light.
Crew is an element to consider as well.
I sure hope that this game does conquest frontier wars style maps with wormholes to different sectors.

I have not confirmed 3d movement for ships yet but the starbase you start with seems to be able to move up and down. Whether this is limited like in sins of a solar empire, I cannot tell yet.

The sounds and graphical detail are great, if not as stylish as homeworlds so far.

I'd recommend the demo to anybody who likes homeworld.

3D movement confirmed as you can see from the shots below. You can also move individual ships directionally. Although I have not checked if you can literally spin the ships around to change the facing of dorsal turrets to ventral facing.
If anything the key commands are improved over homeworld.

I have discovered that their is a component you can build that forms the first block in a new modular ship class that you can design yourself bit by bit and then save as a template. But have not had a chance to use it yet.

I only put about 20 minutes into it. I liked the look but I found the UI confusing and overly cluttered and complex. You can see even in your screenshots that the UI takes up most of the damn screen. I'm sure there is a good game in there, but I got frustrated trying to find it.

The U.I. is just a matter of a little bit of a learning curve. But I agree that at times it took me a while to find things. I am sure I have many more things to discover which is kind of exciting. The devs just acknowledged the need to teach the player the interface:

Paraphrasing their steam post:

"We apologize for the lack of an in-game tutorial.

We've noticed that the lack of a tutorial in the demo is causing a number of issues, and we apologize for this omission. Fortunately, it is planned for the Early Access release."
