Is anyone going to invest some time into this? MMOs usually aren't my bag, but I love the Dune IP and the very positive reviews have me tempted. As if I don't already have enough on my gaming plate...

I was interested until I saw people riding dune buggies.  That breaks canon enough to make me lose interest.

Hmmm...yeah, how would that work with the sand worms?

They did it in Mass Effect.

Dune buggies, dapping, and dubstep music.  All staples of MMOs and all things worms hate.

I'm starting to think worms are just the noise-sensitive old lady from the apartment downstairs.  if they had arms, they'd just bang on the ceiling with a broom handle.

The game has great reviews despite it being an mmo, one of my buddies has it and can't put it down.

The 35,000 very positive reviews got the better of me and I picked this up over the weekend. I've put about 3 hours into it so far. I think it helps to have an interest in the Dune IP, which is weaved nicely into the game, but by no means mandatory to enjoy the game. The gameplay loop so far is addictive in terms of harvesting resources, crafting tools, weapons and machines and building bases. I will say that there is a lot of grinding early on and it will take several hours before you really unlock the full potential of the game.

I guess the biggest frustration I've had is with death. When you die, you lose everything you're carrying and there does not seem to be a way to get any of it back. Even if you go to the location where you died. So far, I've died twice and both times it was to sand worms. Losing the items I've looted and crafted was a real setback. So far, I've seen bases built by other players and I've seen a few players bouncing around the desert, but have otherwise had no interaction or PvP, which is exactly the way I like it.

Anyway, I'm still interested in exploring more, so we'll see where it takes me.

Edit: apparently, you only lose everything if you're killed by a sand worm. If you're killed in combat, you can go back to the location where you were killed and recover your backpack.

Also, I've gotten a little better at avoiding the worms when moving across desert. It's definitely doable.

I've heard the same though, the games pretty addictive.

Saw a YT review that the devs are pretty receptive to player feed back and are possibly adding a "no forced pvp" feature so that you are not locked out of the end game content.  You basically have to agree to fight if a player challenges you to pvp.  If you don't agree, you auto flee the area.  I kind of like this, you can ignore pvp until your ready or don't all together.  It's smart to run an mmo like this, more play styles will appeal versus just hardcore pvp.

That's critical to me. I don't want to play an MMO where I can get ganked.
