This is in development. Seems to be very early in the process. Here is a good summary video on the development vision and roadmap.

So medival a third time, when die hard fans are screaming for total war Victoria with a possible WWI dlc.

Will the medieval game be a return to greatness or watered down crap like the last game in Egypt.

Not going to say it isn't a thing but any discussion I've ever read about TWs future is M3 and empires 2 - never seen a WW1 voice risen in approval

If and I'll agree it's a massive IF they can pull it off it will be glorious

I have been following this and have saw the latest footage a few days ago. I like that men can now fight within the walls. But I still see the hallmarks of recent total war games. That is to say they want you to funnel you into playing the way they designed the game to be played.

I would like supply lines, the recruitment of lances (a knight bringing his retenue of archers, sergeants etc) and the designing of ones own castle. Manor Lords is still looking a lot better in my mind.

What's more, I believe that their is evidence that a WW1 game was in production but was canned. You can see in some of the early medieval screenshots that their are modern buildings and tank tracks in the snow. This I suspect has led to the huge delay in production and why they announced med3 as pre- pre production or something. I would guess they put ww1 on hold when they got the 40k licence for total war 40k and eventually canned it. To keep the historical community happy med3 was announced and they are hurrying mock ups of early development.  Essentially CA are playing catch up.
The new engine was probably meant for ww1 and re-tooled for 40k. I think med3 will be the poor cousin when it comes to engine customisation.

I don't mean to be negative, but total war has let me down so many times now. I am thinking med3 will be a simple copy of med2 and feel pretty generic. Their will be a few gimics but nothing ground breaking. Hope I am wrong.

Unless med3 beats manor lords, strategos and master of command. Brilliant games that are really showing total war up. I don't know if I will get this.
No doubt it will be pretty. But also pretty shallow historical accuracy wise. No doubt we will not see the crusades like in the first med2. I seem to remember a crusades addon?

For all their money and experience with games, total war games feel lifeless to me these days. With the other three mentioned above, I feel like a kid in a candy store once again. Much like hollywood, CA has watered much down when it comes to military history simulation and understanding. Content to rest on their laurels. Has anybody looked at the way RULE OF IRON DARK AGE? He is using fluid mechanics to model each soldier individually on an total war style map. He has a video titled "can I beat med3 to release?".

Sounds intriguing, but I wonder if he will be able to pull it off in practice.  Have you played his Napoleon game, and if so, what did you think of it?

I'm definitely keeping my eyes on this.  Hoping that MTW: Medieval 3 allows easy modding.

I've got 213 hours, according to Steam, invested into Napoleon.  The vanilla game is definitely good in my opinion.  The only gripe I have is that the grand campaign map is limited only to Europe.  Naval combat is less clunky than in Empire TW and land battles in Napoleon are better as well in terms of manipulating your units on the field.

I gave his napoleonic one a miss because he could not align formations with his terrain properly and therefore settled for more basic formations iirc. I would still consider it on sale, but the combat itself looked a little janky still. He might pull the medieval one off though, we will see. I am not a big fan of games whose only aim is to do very large battles, they do not tend to capture anything but massive numbers in their battles. Missing most of the other elements of combat.

Yes, this problem is still present in Napoleon.  Can't remember, but I think this also happens in Warhammer TW series, no?

Total war does not have enough men for the numbers to mean they do not fit on the map or map terrain while moving around. However Total War has always had pathing problems in cities. Rule of Iron dark age had scale issues with the map that meant the huge numbers did not fit where they should have deployed in wider formations, thus they from what I saw tended to say in deep blocks or columns.

I agree with you.

Actually the Medieval period is being nicely served by modders who breath life into vanilla TW.
