Light infantry was one of the keys to eighteenth-century warfare, and nowhere more so than in the American Revolutionary War.
Our latest essay looks at how light troops scouted, screened, skirmished, seized broken ground, and shaped the conditions for battle long before the main lines closed.
From European precedents to Brandywine, Freeman's Farm, and Cowpens, it explores the doctrine, tactics, and battlefield role of an arm too often reduced to myth. A great read for anyone interested in the history behind the games.

Part II of our Wars of the Renaissance series moves north and west, from the battlefields of Italy to the fractured worlds of France, Scotland, and the Baltic. This new essay follows the French Wars of Religion, the Rough Wooing and Scotland's civil crisis, and the early northern struggles over Livonia, ports, castles, and sea routes. It is a story of civil war, dynastic pressure, religious fracture, fortified towns, armed communities, and rulers trying to turn military force into lasting political order.

Few troops of the American Revolution are more burdened by myth than the so-called "Hessians." Were they really drunken mercenaries, sold by greedy princes and defeated at Trenton after Christmas revelry? The real story is far more interesting.
This new article looks beyond the familiar caricature to explore the German auxiliary troops in British service: where they came from, why "Hessian" is only partly accurate, how subsidy warfare worked, what captivity changed, and why these soldiers remain one of the most misunderstood forces of the war.

Today's essay is from Andrew Bamford, designer of Musket & Pike: War of the Austrian Succession. He turns to the Jacobite forces of the 1745 Rising: an army too often reduced to Highland romance, but in reality shaped by European military practice, improvised organisation, French influence, and calculated psychological warfare.

From Prestonpans and Falkirk Muir to the disaster at Culloden, the article looks at how Charles Edward Stuart's army was raised, dressed, commanded, and fought.

As a reminder, our Summer Sale is also underway, with 25% off eligible catalog titles through July 5 — a good opportunity to round out your library.

How did the Thirty Years' War reshape warfare?
Our latest essay looks beyond battlefield tactics to the deeper transformation of armies, states, and civilian society.
From military enterprise and contribution systems to the destruction of Magdeburg and the war's immense demographic cost, it traces how conflict became a sustained contest of finance, administration, coercion, and survival. The war did not invent the modern army, but it revealed why one became necessary.

Musket & Pike: Thirty Years' War is scheduled to appear on Steam later today, in the U.S. evening, and will then be available to add to your wishlist.

The final installment of our Wars of the Renaissance blog series turns east to the Ottoman-Habsburg frontier, where two empires contested the future of Central Europe for nearly two centuries.
Beginning with the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the article explores the rise of Ottoman Hungary, the fortress systems that dominated the borderlands, the Long Turkish War, and the military transformations that defined Renaissance warfare.
It concludes the series by exploring one of the Renaissance's longest, most complex, and most consequential military frontiers.

Sweden's rise to dominance around the Baltic was one of the great military success stories of early modern Europe—but the Great Northern War would bring that empire crashing down.
Our latest historical essay explores how Charles XII's battlefield brilliance ultimately gave way to Peter the Great's strategic transformation of Russia, reshaping northern Europe for generations.
As Musket & Pike: Great Northern War arrives on Steam for wishlisting today, an updated free demo will also be available.

The Thirty Years' War is usually told through kings, generals, battles, and sieges. Peter Hagendorf saw it from a very different perspective. A professional soldier for more than two decades, he recorded the war as he experienced it: endless marches, wounds, hunger, plunder, sick wives, dead children, and the constant struggle to survive.

Our latest article follows Hagendorf across Europe and explores what his remarkable diary can tell us about everyday life inside one of Europe's most destructive wars.
