The campaign continues, much to my surprise! I thought it would end with scenario 6. But we were sent off to defend a line and holy crap, it turned ugly. We learned all about how to defend against Japanese Banzai attacks and how brutally effective they are. You can watch two companies of Marines be evaporated in this playthrough. What a brutal realization of how effective the Japanese can be when they want to! We were successful, but at what cost indeed...

The Greek holiday continues! Crete is an impressive place, there are lots of places for the Greeks and British to hide in the hills. They keep attacking though and some of their hits are quite impressive. The Germans are holding the line and have secured some key positions and doing their best to maintain some form of order during all the counter attacks. Due to the losses, we are starting to more effectively use the terrain to our advantage, although sometimes it seems the British have all the luck. On the bright side, we have some more reinforcements we can use to start the assault on Chanai!

It was a great campaign, we finally finished it. The last battle was a doozy and went right to the wire. We pushed our way through the jungle and coast as hard as we could. Our light tanks suffered terribly due to hidden Japanese engineers and very potent infantry with leaders. Even though the Japanese massed, the assaults failed and our last assault was victorious to scrape a major victory, concluding the linked campaign. After that, we played a defence as the Dutch against a Japanese assault. That was the first time playing the Dutch in a short scenario, learned a lot and would be happy to play them again!

Campaign Series West Front - I'm really enjoying this Crete scenario. I've forgotten how well the British can fight. I'm suffering far too many causalities in these initial stages, but I'm making progress. I have set up a few kill zones which is making life a bit easier. Although, the British have done the same, especially in the new landing area northeast of Chanai!  Those blasted Bofors guns are a royal pain in the bottom. We have some timely reinforcements, so I will see what I can do for clearing up behind our landing areas and start slowly pushing out. Things are looking, well, tough.

Campaign Series West Front - We only managed to do a few turns of this scenario this time, but there is lots of action and fantastic discussion! Thank you Tim and Alistair for keeping the conversation flowing. It was a nice trip down memory lane indeed. Much to our surprise, during turn 17 we ended up experiencing night. That will help our horrific artillery casualties, but will make advancing a little more challenging and we have to make sure our lines are very well formed before we start pushing out towards Chania. All the positive vibes for our paras, right?

I made it back to streaming after a small hiatus into RL. What is the world coming to, eh? We returned to our invasion of Crete. It is still night and we are making some slow and steady progress. I took the opportunity to show you some effective assaulting in these old games and how to herd. Does it always go your way? No, but it is extremely rewarding when it does! Our Italian navy is getting closer to Chania, hopefully that will be helpful for the pending assault.

Ah it's good to be back to Campaign Series Vietnam. We started up a new scenario using the latest BETA version of the Fall Update, mostly - I noted a data error so didn't use the weapon files. We started up Digging them Out, a Marine and ARVN infantry fight that takes place near Quang Ngai. We started our advance, which is unnerving on so many levels. The hidden snipers and machine guns are definitely something that makes you skin crawl. We have some Hogs on station, but with a dug in enemy, they are only so effective. We did start the morning with some napalm though! Gotta love the smell of napalm in the morning...

Well firetruck. Talk about a mess and a half. There are Viet Cong everywhere and they are dug in exceptionally well. We are making some progress and succeeded in securing two primary objectives, but it has taken nearly half the scenario to do it and the losses. Well, it is best not to talk about the losses. It is an interesting challenge to figure out how to reduce these various Viet Cong positions with the limited forces I have. I'm grateful for the heavy artillery and gunships though, they make a world of difference!

We are slowly whittling down the British on the island. After a lot of hard fighting, we're pushing onto Chania from two directions. There are significant defences there, but we found one undefended road, which we will hopefully use en force later in the scenario. At the moment, we are doing our best to push through the initial trench lines and try to surround and isolate the city. There is some British batteries to the east of the city that are taking a toll on my poor paras, they are definitely high priority to destroy. Life is shot enough as it is!

What a challenging scenario. It has been a doozy of a fight. We broke past the halfway point in the scenario and we are making some progress, which is good. It's been a messy and bloody affair though, each position has taken a vast amount of troops and artillery support to break down the defences. Our tunnel rats found a very juicy target though, so we are sending them in to see if they eliminate the target. Unfortunately, we had two gunships ambushed and shot down, there goes our clean air operations streak. C'est la guerre.

We continue advancing towards Chania, although it's a very bloody affair. The batteries are having a field day on our poor Paras in the east. Even without Line of Sight, they attack strength was enough to completely eliminate a whole company with leaders. That was a rough go indeed. I thought I would be clever and flank the position, but alas, not as lucky indeed. Otherwise, the attack in the west is going well. We have some reinforcements in the form of mountain troops! Now that is exciting, I just don't know what to do with them. Decisions, decisions!

Crossroads

#671
It's been a while, but we're finally back with public betas for both of our Campaign Series titles.

While these updates continue the work of bringing the remaining UI elements in line with the new visual style, the real star of the show is the completely revised United Kingdom Order of Battle. It's been updated for Middle East and, for the first time ever, is now included in Vietnam as well. To quote Inglourious Basterds, I think this just might be Jason's masterpiece. At least for now!

Before you get started, please disable any mods you may have enabled via JSGME before installing the update. Also, if you've opted for legacy map graphics by renaming the 3D_OLD folder, be sure to switch back to the new stock graphics before updating. For more details on this, see the Release Notes section titled Enabling Old 3D Map Graphics. This is important!
