An NYPD officer purchased warm socks and boots for a homeless man on a recent wintry night.

The photo has gone viral on Facebook, and is a nice feel-good story for the holidays. Picture and article at the link below.

Let's hope that the young officer doesn't get too jaded as he gains more experience on the job.

That cop is a nice guy. Like Centurion, I hope he doesn't become too jaded due to his future experiences in his chosen profession.

Heard on Fox tonight - he spent $100 on those boots. That's a man with a heart. Cops don't make much, even in NYC.

Great story thanks for sharing LB.

What a nice guy. You don't often hear of cops being nice to the public any more than they have to.

My brother is a cop in NJ.

I rode along with him once while he did his job at night.  He lives in a fairly "safe" part of NJ, not like Camden or some shithole like that.

Anyway, we went out on I-295 and started trolling for bad guys.  It was shooting fish in a barrell looking for speeders- like 20mph over every 5 seconds or so- so he starts looking for something else to pull them over for; missing head or tailight, etc.  His thinking is that if their car is in chowed up shape and they're speeding they're more likely to have something "interesting" during the stop.

So we finally pull over a couple of dudes in some gangster looking car.  Man, I was seriously freaking.  He pulls these dudes over, at night, dark, puts on the lights, gets out, walks to the driver side.  I'm thinking that if this dude is full-on Goodfellas and has a body in the trunk, is running some drugs and knows he's heading to Rikers for 20 years, or maybe he just doesn't like white people, he's dead.  What a friggin' job.

It gave me a whole new appreciation of the shit cops do everyday for us.  I mean, he goes out and does this all day, everyday, and never knowing if he just pulled over some psychopath with a gun in his lap.

I've seen what cops do and I really try to understand their point of view when I get pulled over or hassled at some gate going on base.  I'm really glad to see a story like this publicized because I think sometimes it's easy to forget that these guys get stuck pulling a lot of shitty duty sometimes, and meanwhile they're brothers, sons, fathers, husbands that really are out to make things safer for the rest of us.

I'm sure by now you all have heard that this guy has once again been spotted on the streets of NYC without shoes?  In an interview, he explained that he has hidden the boots because they are worth a lot of money.  He also commented that he never gave permission for his photo to be posted, and he now wants, quote-a piece of the pie-

Even his own brother has been interviewed and has said that this guy just doesn't want to change his life.  "You can lead a horse to water, but you just can't make him drink."  Amen.

I never donate anything to someone on the street.  They will waste it, destroy it, or use it to buy alcohol or crack.  If you want to make a donation for the homeless, make it to a charitable organization.

I couldn't agree more.  Growing up my dad's advice was if ever you really felt the need/guilty to give someone on the street never give money or material things.  Either point them to the nearest homeless shelter or buy them a burger from McDonalds because other then that it will either get stolen and/or sold for drug/alcohol money.  The very few times I have done this the person looks so disappointed that they didn't get anything of "value" which just makes me more jaded on the whole subject.

One of my son's former teammates pulled his good deed on Thanksgiving, along the lines of what Tent was saying...

From his mom's Facebook post
QuoteSo proud of my little man. Everyday on our way to soccer we pass a homeless man who lives under a bypass bridge. {My son} wanted to make sure that this man had a Thanksgiving dinner so he asked his Nana if he could make a plate for this man. We drove to the bridge and sure enough he was there so {My son} brought him a thanksgiving feast. These are the moments that make me a proud mom.

I still admire the cop for spending his hard earned dollars on that guy. It could be he was the exception. Or not.

My wife used to be a social worker. She dealt a lot with homeless people. The vast majority know exactly where they need to go to get a warm meal and shelter. Most prefer not to do so because the rules require them to be sober with lights out by 10 pm. It cramps their style.

There are exceptions - a few are in such bad shape that they truly cannot take care of themselves, but those situations are rare. In a city the size of NY the odds are you'll see more of those exceptions because it's a larger city, so who knows?

All I know is we walk right past those folks. They know where to go to get a meal. They're looking for cash to get drugs or alcohol.
