This was a shock to read this morning. A California town is so broke that it is having to make major cuts to its police force, prompting the Mayor to tell residents to "Lock your doors and load your guns."

That's scary advice. Particularly if you don't own a gun.

QuoteSan Bernardino is so bankrupt that the city's attorney is advising residents to "lock your doors and load your guns," in the face of budgetary cuts that have downsized the police force by 80 officers.

City Attorney Jim Penman made his comments to about 150 residents at a council meeting assembled to address the uptick in crime, including the recent murder of an elderly woman.  Since 2011, the California city has seen a 50 percent increase in murders.

"Let's be honest, we don't have enough police officers. We have too many criminals living in this city," Penman told KCBS-TV. "We have had 45 murders this year. That's far too high for a city of this size."

Being that it's San Bernadino ('San Berdoo' in 60's biker lingo) maybe they can contract out to the Hell's Angels for security.

Yeah that werx.

San Bernardino County is just over 2 million citizens.
Isn't a murder rate of 45 per annum acceptable by USA standards?
Maybe he meant they have too many murders considering the
number of white people who live there...77%.

Without clicking the link or even reading the rest of the thread, I'm betting it's San Bernardino.  I'm so glad I don't live in that town.  (For that matter, I'm glad I'm not a Californian.)

I believe this is what is called giving up.

Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Don't worry.  I'm sure the cops are still actively involved in revenue generation for the city via ticketing and fining.  You know, the important stuff.

Perhaps JH can donate some of his ammo stores. Considering he has a vault full, and his hoarding is the cause of rising ammo costs, I think it is only fair.

A sad report. Probably worth taking a look at the full report linked in that article: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/121204/dq121204a-eng.pdf

A couple of things stand out. First, firearms account for only a percentage of all homocides. Second, the firearms homocide graph corresponds almost 1:1 with the overall number of homocides. Third, knives accounted for almost all the increased homocides in 2011.

Unfortunately you can take a gun away from a murderer but you can't take a murderer away from murder.

Its Canada.  We're drunk.  We stab you because it is too
much hassle to dig out a gun. And ammo is expensive.
