From my experience with the new StormPowered setup, it's just like Steam.  Has an offline mode, for example.

Read it closely. I don't know for sure what the details are, but Storm Eagle's DRM has been a bit of a lightning rod in past discusisons.

I'm not sure if there's still a requirement to connect your install via internet every 2 weeks or less. 

But I believe they tossed that terrible DRM out when they created their new delivery client, but I'm not sure if there is still some similar requirement to update during a certain period or lose access.  Everyone had complained about the prior DRM and my impression is that they laid off that BS, but I haven't checked out the details lately.

Nope.

Even if SES decided to try putting them up over there, I don't think Steam takes too kindly to most indie wargames and sims.

But, if you don't mind installing yet another distribution client on your system - I believe it's DRM is pretty much just like Steam in that you gotta run it through the client (whether online or offline).

There is an off-line mode for Steam games.  However, the truly stupid thing about the off-line mode is that you have to GO ONLINE and tell the game to start up the next time it opens, it will start in off-line mode.  This means that if you forget to tell your game to go to off-line mode and then cannot get online to change the setting, you aren't playing.  ROFL

It's this kinda half-assed crap that makes me rage about Steam's client.  >:(   I'm not even sure if they did that by intention, because some of their client's features are regularly left half finished or buggy.

Yeah, the Steam client is horrible and stupidly resource-intensive for what it is too; if I don't manually kill it, it greatly extends my PC's shutdown time (which is an issue for me since I dual-boot).  I also fell victim to the so-stupid-it's-almost-funny "offline" mode when I moved house earlier this year.  I was not impressed at all.  Steam is usually the last resort for me when I want to buy a game.

Having said that, I will never do business with these Storm Eagle guys, thanks to a fairly recent thread right here on Grogheads.

You think that's bad, Huw, I bought and installed a bunch of Steam games right before I went on a 6-month deployment on my last ship.  So we pull out, I plug my laptop in, bring up Steam, click "go offline" and I was like, "Uh oh...this isn't good..."

Yes, it made for a much longer 6 months!

Christ Toonces, that's awful.  This is the reason I'll always try to buy directly from a developer or somewhere like GOG.  It's also the reason I want to do unspeakably nasty things to publishers that insist on using Steamworks with their games.

You are already doing the nastiest thing possible to a company: you're denying them your money.  It's the only thing that matters.
