...anyone playing Nethergate or Conquest of Elysium 3?  I was looking around the Steam store and found both of them for a reasonable price.  Any feedback on either game from the community?

Isn't Nethergate one of the old titles from the guy who did the Avernum series?

It looks like the interface & such is similar, just an older version.  I wonder what screen resolution it runs at, however.  I had eyed it myself, due to the RPG Roman Britannia setting, but dunno how well it's aged or if it wasn't as good as some of his other stuff.

If you pick up Nethergate, let me know how well it plays.  It's still only two-fitty, right?

I bought CoE3 recently and haven't played it much yet.  From what I've seen it's a fantasy TBS with lots of races which have their own play styles.  So you might be a necromancer and not need to spend money to hire troops but be dependent on finding former battlefields in order to raise armies.  Or you might be some kind of summoner who has to find magical reagents that enable you to summon demons to fight for you.  Or you might be a soldier who hires his troops the old fashioned way etc.

The graphics are initially off-putting, you'll never come to enjoy watching battles being played out, and the interface is arse.  However once you get used to all that the game is surprisingly easy to play considering how deep it is.  Options abound, and with the randomised nature of the maps, it all makes for very high replayability.  I would never have paid full price for it - I demand more polish for that (in terms of presentation) - but I think I got it for about £7.50 and I definitely don't regret it for that price.  The only reason I'm not playing it right now is that I've had a load of other new games too.  Actually I'm looking forward to diving in again.

That's encouraging, Huw.  Not sure if "arse" is anything I want to associate my self with, but, the rest of your review seems to be worth it ;-)

It was still 2.50 as of last night, Nefaro.  Been looking for a RPG, so, this one might be it.  If it is, I'll surely let you know.

Anyone else?

Nethergate is pretty fun and not a normal wizards, elves, dragons sort of RPG.  However if you want to play a Spiderweb game and can swing $5, I'd honestly recommend http://store.steampowered.com/app/208400/ as it's the newest game with an updated UI plus there are more games coming for the new version Avernum.  Or go to gog and look at some of the old school ones on sale over there all for less than $10 most around $5 with the ongoing sale.

Downloading Avernum Escape From The Pit now.  The description fit the itch just right.  Thanks for the suggestion :-)
