To release, yes.
But to announce a proper release date is something else entirely.
If they can't yet commit to a certain date, then I doubt they're close to release.

I will say that the game already looks very polished, so depending on how beta goes and the finishing touches on the game we could see it sooner than later.....

Not to my knowledge, no.  I believe AC was simply citing Matrix as an example of a dev/publisher who doesn't announce release dates til the last minute (and that therefore Snowbird could do the same).
