There's also another medieval themed game coming called Banished, I saw mention of it this morning...don't have a link handy at the moment.

Actually, Banished made me think... Dan, if you are sufficiently hardcore, you might try Dwarf Fortress. It is a free kingdom builder and economic sim (also a siege sim, in a sense). I would grab the Lazy Newb Pack, and play with a tileset, however.

I was going to buy Medieval Lords, but it has StarForce as its DRM and that scared me off. I guess I'll pick it up when GOG.com offers it.
yes, the original release has starforce. However, i bought a budget edition "white label" i think, which is starforce free.

Be prepared, the interface is from 1988 and the game is gut-bustingly hard. But there is a lot to love there!

I have looked at Dwarf Fortress over the years.  Hard doesn't bother me.

Have to add:  is there any legal place to get Medieval Lords retail?
I saw some used on eBay.

Yeah.  Actually, I just couldn't stomach Dwarf Fortress due to the interface & gfx.  Notably the terrible height display where any tile that is +/-1 level, compared to your current one, just shows as an up or down arrow.  Damn mess.

I suggest picking up the Gnomoria beta or even A Game Of Dwarves for a less frustrating way to play the same style of game.
