Frontline this week chronicled both the Ukrainian and Syrian conflicts.

It really showed how f'ed-up Ukraine is on both sides. It showed how both sides are corrupt and fear-mongering.  The Ukrainian nationalists are playing on fears that Putin will absorb all of Ukraine back into Russia, and that he is deliberately interfering into the affairs of Ukraine (which he certainly appears to be doing).  They play on fears that the Ukrainian identity will be swallowed by the Russian behemoth.

The pro-Russians are playing on fears that the regime in Kiev is ultra-nationalist and fascist like the Nazis (and it certainly appears that some are exactly that).  That they plan to ethnically cleanse the Russians out of Ukraine, and that they are every bit as bad as the Nazi-fascists of WWII.  It certainly appears as if Russian agent provocateurs are actively inciting fears, and paying local pro-Russian thugs to intimidate and fight/murder pro-Ukrainian sympathizers.
