QuoteIf Ukraine folds easily to Russia's military might, neighboring nations might have good reason to worry.

if they go after anything else then they get to play with the NATO varsity.   >:

Yourforgetting who the US President is.  It will take himmonths to admit that anything is wrong.  By then the T80 will be on the English Channel.

Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

look for F-15 deployments to Germany as the next step.  if we put a squadron or two of F-22s in England shit will be serious.

Shit is serious in a 1939 sort of way, and on multiple fronts. It would be cool if the POTUS could see that and get his head from betwixt his buttocks.

Yea, well, he still won't admit the Hassan from the Ft Hood murders is a terrorist.  So it may take him well after he's no longer president to admit that.

You guys really want to start a shooting war with Russia?  Sanctions are really beginning to hurt and will be more effective than starting a land war where the last successful invader were the mongols

Shooting first has worked out so well for the US in the past decade

I agree that what Russia is doing is complete bullshit, but what vital US national interest is served by starting a shooting war in Ukraine?  Seriously - suppose we deployed 1CAV and 82ABN to Kyiv.  Then what?

Starting a land war with Russia is insane.

That said, what is Putin going to do when faced with a tanking economy thanks to those sanctions? Will *his* starting a shooting war going to help his economy, or become a means for him to save face?

I can well imagine the Russian media spinning economic woes as being the West's fault, not Russia's. It wouldn't be a difficult stretch for them to get them worked up enough to want to start such a land war. Their media is just as good at pimping the Putin regime as ours is at doing the same for Obama's.

While we certainly wouldn't (and shouldn't) start such a thing, it might be inevitable unless cooler heads start getting reasonable.

Not much probably.

It's the only way, from the east, across the steppe.  Economic sanctions have had real effect in Iran.  I can assume Russia would trade more with the BRICs maybe. But I also think they are wary of the Chinese getting too cozy on their Eastern border.  What Russia is trying with Ukraine, could China also try with them in the east ?

Potentially it would end the greed for "new russia". They may back away before too much face is lost.

2 things are for sure:
-as long as the EU keeps giving fuel 10s of billions to Russia every year, Russia will be able to fund further aggression.
-once Russia has taken Ukraine there will be other countries next. He will have the bit in his teeth. His ego will be even more megalomaniac. A military response at that point will be far more likely to come to an exchange of a few nukes.

Some EU politicians will do nothing until Cossacks are raping their families. Yes, that is overly dramatic, but these people better wake the fuck up.

Keep in mind that Red Storm Rising started over economic problems.  The west may not want a shooting war but Russia may want something different.

Mr. Bigglesworth

I had the feeling it was going to come to war when the news released a picture of Obama staring down Putin across a table muck like the old picture of Nixon vs  Brezhnev. My guess was that the new picture was a response to China leaking that the Russians asked them to destabilize fannie and freddie. That put Obama in the FU mindset. Unfortunately that was a stupid thing to do to a torturing KGB man. He has had the FU back attitude since.

I also think Putin correctly reads Obama as unwilling to fight them until he absolutely has to. As soon as the nobel committee decided to give Obama that prize I thought that is a stupid thing to do to a sitting President (I probably posted that). So if Putin goes after all of non-NATO in the area he may get away with it. To prevent an insurgency he will replace all the people in new russia with Russians. Undesirables will get Siberian hotel.

So yes, maybe China has set the 2 biggest threats to their Empire to fight each other. One way or another, it seems a limited fight against Russia is coming. The time for not aggravating the situation by military buildup is over. NATO needs to project a real war footing to stop this now.

That line of thinking is, I believe, exactly what Putin is counting on.

And he's not wrong to do so. There's plenty of other people that *could* take action but are, thus far, failing to do so.  I'd they lack the capability, well... that's a hard way to learn that lesson but it needs to be learned.
