I just started reading Tom Clancy's Command Authority (published in 2013) which opens with a Russian invasion of Estonia on the belief that NATO will not respond.

The last Tom Clancy book, Command Authority, published last year, is all about Russian aggression against its former satellites. Dialogue on p. 70:

Golovko added, "Volodin has his eyes on the Crimea, in Southern Ukraine, and he knows once Ukraine joins NATO, that will be difficult for him to achieve.  The way he sees it, he has to move soon."

Ryan said, "He is right that there is no treaty between Ukraine and NATO.  And if he does invade, getting Europe on board to fight for the Crimea is a nonstarter."

Putin probably could do it, but how long would he be able to hold all five capitals?

Until he thinks Obama has grown a backbone.

Obama gave a speech tonight that had me cheering for him.

I think after six years he's starting to realize that no matter how hard he tries to be nice to them, they still want to kill us. Having figured that out, he sounds like he's prepared to do what's necessary.

Sorry, wrong thread - the speech was about ISIL. He said nothing of Ukraine.

Still, maybe the lesson learned is transferable.

I still dont see anyone here actually advocating that we send troops to the Ukraine and start a shooting war with Russia?  So what else does that leave other than people on the sidelines trying to get us dragged into this mess.  Its easy to say yes to using force after all that got us two gulf wars and look how well those turned out....much harder and wiser to say no

And this is the attitude the Putin is counting on. 

There are two choices, do as you advocate and what we are currently doing, which is very little.  Or send troops in Ukraine and challenge Putin to keep pushing. 

We did nothing when Putin took South Ossetian from Georgia.  We did nothing when he took Crimean from Ukraine.  We have placed economic sanctions on him, but it doesn't seem to be doing a lot to cause him to pull back.
