According to the Wall St. Journal 2 explanations for the riots.  First is China put a deep sea oil drilling rig in disputed waters in the South China Sea claimed by various parties.

Second explanation is the well-used "income inequality" argument coupled with domestic inflation.

The riots were about as targeted as those in Muslim countries.  Anything that looked "Chinese" was burned or sacked.  This included many factories and businesses from Taiwan.  But they hit those from lots of other Asian countries also.  In addition, if you had Chinese signage for that target market you were also likely to get burned or looted.

China officially pitched a fit - but it remains to be seen if there are any long term consequences other than businesses reconsidering having operations in Vietnam.
