I really hate you guys . . .  my laptop does not meet the requirements for SB

What laptop/spec do you have?
8 yr's old, Windows Vista, 32 bit, 1.7GHz, 2Gb RAM, GE Force 7600 video card.

We are looking at new desktops just haven't made the plunge yet.

I played with similar spec apart from cpu. That was a P4 3.0ghz and it ran well with no shadows and no AA. The minimum requirements for v3 is 2.5 ghz (see post 1). You may be able to run V2.654 (last v2) better though you will miss quite a lotand it will limit your on line play. Also the future is 64bit with SB.

If you purchased a license it would allow you to play any version of SB so you could play V2.654 and when upgraded you could use the same license for v3. This is best done with a Dongle license.

Hope this helps

Updated post 1: Updates

From Esims (Ssnake)18/08/14 The question of update pricing/frequency.

"We had a long hiatus after the initial release of version 2.251 in 2006 where the first "for pay" upgrade was in 2009 with version 2.460. From then on it was an approximate 15 months period for the 2.5 and 2.6 upgrades respectively, 3.0 took us then almost two years to complete.
We have come to the conclusion that the old 12...18 months pace can no longer be maintained. The new upgrade frequency will be in the 18...24 month bracket. Summer 2015 would be the earliest date, but I think it's rather going to be the fourth quarter of 2015.
There are a number of substantial code changes going on at the moment and not so much the addition of new equipment. Of course we want to release upgrades that offer significant new tactical stuff for the user to play around with, and not just "new simulation under the hood" with no appreciable change from the end-user's perspective (even if those changes under the hood may be infinitely more important in the long run)."

I hate to writ it, but this isn't entirely correct. Time-based licenses work only for SB Pro PE 3.0 and later. However, by turning off shadowmapping and antialiasing one can get decent framerates even with Intel integrated graphics, and the visual quality and overall performance will be somewhat on the same level as with version 2.654.

Our hardware recommendations are explicitly not minimum requirements. If you think about it, it's hard to define what the minimum requirements should be. That the game doesn't crash? That there is a decent framerate (what is a "decent" framerate, anyway?) etc.
So, I'd say you could still give it a try with a one-month license. I think it can be made to work. Whether the overall experience is "good enough" for your taste, only you can decide.

I really hate you guys . . .  my laptop does not meet the requirements for SB so I am SOL and can only dream about it atm.  :'( I need a 2nd job.

I have the pc but I just cant justify the price.  when I get down to it I would have bought this (should have) 10 years ago.  now I enjoy fragging "kids" in World of Tanks for free.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.
