Really, really like the GBoH system now though I'm now learning how not to use my units. It really is as the intro says, all about knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your units. Making some bad choices but it's a good learning experience.

I really need to get this on the table soon. Every time one of you posts about this I resolve to do it...but I always have something else going on. I need a bigger table!

I actually have four games from the GBoH series that I've yet to play.

A couple have been punched and clipped, and one which I had played in it's original version ages ago but am waiting on the reprinted counters (Alexander).

Gotta be in the right mood I suppose.

That's the long and short of it. I have all, or at least most of Hoplite punched but I've yet to be in exactly the right mood.

The good news is I was able to get some of my office/gaming room cleaned out this weekend, giving me shelf space for my quickly growing collection and more table space to play on. Getting things (mostly) organized has put me more in the mood for board games. I played the first day of Waterloo 20 tonight, even documenting it for an AAR.

We had a really good session of Paths of Glory at the LFGS this weekend. It left me feeling like a bit of a curmudgeonly old grog as my opponent started complaining of inability to focus after about 5 hours of play. As I've been out of board gaming for about 20 years, I'm still coming at it from the old days of weekend sessions of Squad Leader, Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich, Siege of Jerusalem and the occasional SPI monster game. An 8 hour session seems normal to me but seems an insurmountable obstacle to most modern day gamers.

At any rate, it was a really fun session. We got to the Spring, 1916 turn before calling it a day and taking some photos on our phones so we could carry on next week.

I am playing as the central powers and things are going fairly well. I have managed to knock out the Italians entirely. Turkey is stalemated. I am in a good position to push into France as I've knocked out Sedan and Verdun is reduced. The problem is the damned Russians. Every time I think I've got things queued up to push into France, the damned Russians cause problems for the pathetic Strauss-Hungarians in the east and I've got to waste all my ops points to forestall and Russian breakthrough so I never seem to be able to manage to realize the Schlieffen plan. I think I've finally got him though as Italy's completely out of the picture and I can push into southern France with two German and one Austrian army.

SDR -- Awesome! Five hours, though, kids these days.

Doug and I are somewhere in the vicinity of 1/3 the way through a Commander: The Great War campaign game and we're measuring progress in inches...except in Palestine where it feels like four guys hitting each other with sticks...and throwing the occasional stone...

Played some ASL last Saturday with a local friend. He's a self proclaimed ASL exclusivist, has been a great mentor to me, and has a knack for building some of the sweetest ASL dice towers you could ever imagine. I took ownership of my own set last weekend. They are designed specifically with ASL players in mind.

By the way Rek, is that the map for VotG? I have *got* to get in to a RB and/or VotG campaign one of these days. All of my wargaming will of been for not if I fail to do that in this lifetime!

You are correct Garry. We played VotG scenario #21 Defending The Voentorg, which was unusual for using a diamond shaped area of the map (can barely make out the red diamond on the scenario sheet in the photos). It's one of the scenario's that was published in ASL Journals 8 and 9. I guess some of the scenarios weren't quite ready at the time the HASL was published.

Let me know you'd you'd like to VASL some VotG's

Just purchased The Great War...never played a C&C game before as I always felt they where the Bear and Pretzel boardgame version. However my obsession with Ww1 took hold. Really I'm waiting on red Poppies Campaign game.

The kids and I finished up the first game of Carcassonne this evening. I hate to admit it, but the game was fun and is the perfect level of difficulty for them. They understood the rules, tile placement, and scoring within 10 minutes of starting the game. The younger one doesn't necessarily get the strategy of tile placement, but she loved putting the tiles on the board and moving the meeple on the scoring tracker. The oldest is a cutthroat when it comes to tile and meeple placement. Good times.
