  Hoplites on the floor, but on the table above them, maybe some SBDs intercepting Mavises or something.  (Bomb vs Bomber should make the Fighting Wings rules simpler, maybe).

For a bomber the SBD Dauntless had some serious take-down power with 2x50-cal over the engine and twin 30's on a flex mount in the back. It was probably the most maneuverable and heavily armed single engine purpose-built bomber of WW2. IIRC, the Dauntless shot down more enemy planes that it itself suffered in combat losses. One SBD pilot shot down two Zeros and rammed a third, destroying it, all during the same dogfight. Still, the Mavis was festooned with defensive armament of its own, including a 20mm cannon, so it could be an interesting fight.

Plus quite a unique Air Brake system.

I finally got 'Bitter Woods - Designer Edition' out on the table and managed a few moves to learn the rules.

Units are mainly brigades / regiments with a few battalions; scale is 2 miles to the hex and each turn is approx. 12 hours.

Nice map and components, and so far, it seems like a pretty good game for solo play. There is nothing ground-breaking here, but its a easy to learn and has plenty of optional rules and scenarios, so lots of re-playability I would say.

I'll report further as I get into it.

I'm also reading the new Beevor book on the Ardennes offensive.

At heart, it's an Indiana Jones simulator. Players can either play cooperatively or competitively, and it's built so that it can be played solo (sort of like Shadows of Brimstone, which is done by the same peeps that did Fortune and Glory). The bad guys are, I think in the base set, represented by either the Mob or the Nazis. Expansions add other evil organizations and extra stuff, but I'm sticking with the base set until I give it a few tries at the table.
