What's on your table right now?

I am in the process of trying to determine what will be on my table in the near future.  Now that the Steam sale is over I still have some extra funds to spend on just one more game.  I've decided I want a good old fashioned board wargame.  I also want something contemporary in build quality so nothing like a 1970's classic printed on electric orange or tan backgrounds.   ;)

After much thought I've narrowed down my choices to the following:

  • Wing Leader (side scrolling airplane game)
  • RAF: Battle of Britain (Lion/Eagle/2 Player)
  • U.S. Civil War by GMT (Mark Simonavitch)

All of these seem great but I can't make up my mind!

Reviews say that Forbidden Stars is pretty much just a 2-player game due to the lengthy battles forcing any extra players to go take a nap for 10 minutes at a time.

I've played it twice and didn't find myself bored. There's a mechanic where you play your intended action on a planet. A player going after you can play his intended action on yours, and another on his. The result is a stack that gets built. If you plan appropriately going last (or near last) can be an advantage - or not if you plan poorly/wrongly.

I think that mechanic keeps you in the game even when you're not doing anything because you're waiting to see what everyone else is doing.

Also, the victory objectives are generally scattered all over the map. In a four player game I've found myself caught in a mix between horror and glee as two opponents locked horns in a sector of the map where I really wanted to go. It was great to see them blasting each other, but less than great seeing them occupy a planet I need to win the game.

Perhaps the greatest thing is the chaos walls which block movement. It's amazing how one turn they can help you complete your objective and the next totally spoil it. It's a great mechanic.

So, yes, there are down times between your turn, but generally I've not felt bored. In any event it's no more boring than waiting for your turn in many other boardgames.

If it can be played by 3+ players without much downtime for the third wheels during a battle turn between two other players then it will move back up my wishlist.

I'd just seen it recommended as primarily a 2-player game due to some of the extra downtime for the others during 1v1 dust-ups.  The multi-round card & dice battle sequences don't take too long then?  I tend to worry about long downtimes when one or more players are hands-off for stretches.

I own Wing Leader. You'll like it.

I am loving Star Wars Armada.

I own RAF and Wing Leader and they are both great games.
RAF because it's designed as a solo and plays differently from either side.
Wing Leader because it's a really fresh take on aerial combat and plays as well solo as against a human. The games SDR and I are playing are great fun.

Thanks guys for the feedback.  I'm thinking if I can only get one right now that it will be Wing Leader simply because it is unique in its design.  But I am really interested in those other two games as well.  Maybe I can get those later.  For now I'm convinced that Wing Leader needs to be on my table.   O0

Fun?!  Tell that to my poor, poor Blenhiems.....you monster!

It's a fun game and I'm looking forward to the next in the series ('42-'45).  It was originally scheduled to be out sometime next summer but the designer had some health issues and he's not sure if it'll be out this year.

I want more info on Star Wars Rebellion from FFG.  Release is supposed to be Februrary iirc but I wanna see some gameplay vids.  Looks bitchin.  ;)

If they've somehow figured out a way to make it work as a 2-4 player game, I'm in. If it's a 2 player game playing pretend as more than that, it'll never get played, so I'm out.

Besides, I just scored a trade for Forbidden Stars.  :D

Eh, we don't tend to stress too much about downtime.

Seconding RAF. I did a review here on GH a few years back on the game. I was an avid fan and player of the original RAF game, too.

Got my copy of Wind Leader the other day.  Have only been reading the rulebook so far but I like what I see a lot.  Can't wait to try out the first scenario and comment on actual gameplay.
