(RNN) – Lauren Bacall, the iconic bombshell starlet who rose to fame in Hollywood's Golden Age, has passed away. She was 89 years old.

The actress died Tuesday morning after suffering a stroke in her Upper West Side Manhattan home, her family confirmed with media outlets.

The official Twitter account of Humphrey Bogart's estate broke the news, tweeting: "With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall."

With nicknames like "The Look" and "Betty," Bacall's beauty and acting ability made her a hot commodity to Hollywood, and she has more than 70 acting credits to her name. Her career spanned seven decades, according to IMDB.

Born Betty Jean Perske in New York City on Sept. 16, 1924, she was the daughter of a Polish-Jewish immigrant mother and a New Jersey salesman.

As a child, Bacall wanted to become a dancer, but found acting suited her more. After graduating from high school, she entered the modeling world. She briefly studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which got her a handful of off-Broadway roles.

Through modeling, she gained notoriety from being on the cover of Harper's Bazaar. After the wife of director Howard Hawks spotted her on the cover, she was given a screen test which led to her first role, 1944's To Have and Have Not.

Her most popular role came in the 1948 film Key Largo. Other notable roles for Bacall include Confidential Agent (1945), The Big Sleep (1946) and Dark Passage (1947), roles in which she would co-star with husband Humphrey Bogart.

Her deep, sultry voice and cat-shaped eyes made her perfect for the silver screen. Her role in Hollywood's Golden Age led her to co-star with many of the era's top talents, including Gary Cooper in 1950's Bright Leaf, with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and 1990's Misery with James Caan and Kathy Bates.

Bacall also co-starred in films with Tony Curtis, Henry Fonda, Ingrid Bergman, Robert Stack, Jack Lemon and James Garner.

Through her lengthy career, Bacall was only nominated for one Oscar, for her role as Barbara Streisand's mother in 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces; she did win the Golden Globe in 1997 for best performance by an actress in a supporting role role for the film.

At the 1993 Golden Globes, she was awarded with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for cinematic excellence by the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Lauren Bacall's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1724 Vine Street in Hollywood, was awarded to her in 1960.

In 2010, the she was given an honorary award by the Academy of Motion Pictures, "In recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures." In total, she has 20 awards.

Bacall's last acting credit was a voice-over roll as Evelyn on the FOX animated series Family Guy in 2014.

Bacall married Bogart in 1945. The Hollywood power couple - known as Bogie-Bacall -  were together until his death in 1957 from throat cancer. In 1961, she married Jason Robards, but they divorced in 1969.
