You have ammunition choices with a shotgun that affect the recoil too, like bird shot (less powder) vs buck shot (more powder).

What's the skinny on flechette rounds? Are they worth considering for defensive purposes?

In the comments a poster says they have low recoil.

I'm certainly no hom defense ammo guru. I Would just look at the the shell and if the metal portion at the base is bigger then that means more powder and more recoil, smaller means less.

I'm wondering if the gun laws in MO are anywhere near what they are in, say, Texas.

Last I checked, it's not so free-wheeling here in MO. 

It used to be long ago IIRC but the city Libs went all out to make sure the Castle Defense isn't so easy.   We have a huge amount of countryside farm land where the authorities are 15 to 30 minutes away so those in the country (including my family) still swear they'll blast an intruder who's inside their house.  In those areas, the police only show up to bag & tag whomever gets the short end, so it better be the other guy.   A jury of your peers would see you through the aftermath just fine. 

But we also have two major cities in our state, and unfortunately that's the only place part of our gov't and representatives focus their attention.  Since the situation is a bit different in the cities (I would argue against that to some extent), there's a higher chance you'll get charged by a jury for killing someone who broke into your home.  There are as many idealist unicorns in the city as others.

This has been my view of the Democratic Party for years. They are the party of entitlement, therefore the more people who depend upon the government for their subsistence, for their medical, for their cell phones, the more people will vote for the Democrats. It's the dirty little secret behind the immigration issue. Ask yourself this....if Hispanic voters overwhelmingly leaned toward the Republican Party, do you think Obama would have done what he did on immigration this week?

I don't agree with everything Republicans do or believe in, but I cannot vote for a Democrat. It's that simple.

What you seem to be afraid of is the recoil. That's going to happen with any 12 gauge, Gus. The only way to mitigate that is to go to a smaller bore. A smaller bore will be a bigger number - 20. *Don't* get a 10 gauge if you want a shotgun with less recoil.

If you don't like the idea of getting a 20 gauge then you might want to consider either a pistol or a rifle.

Probably the best thing for you to do is to offer to buy Jarhead a cup of coffee and let him walk you through the ins and outs of what's best for you. The best solution for you may not necessarily be "buy a shotgun."

Use 2 3/4" low recoil slugs and you'll be fine.  The recoil is quite manageable with those.  The KSG does have a recoil dampening pad built into the stock but using 3" magnum rounds will still give you quite a kick.

Alabama has had Castle Defense for ages.  Really cuts down on robberies of occupied homes.  We fairly recently got "stand your ground" legislation.  Still, anyone who would not avoid a gunfight whenever possible is an idiot.

On Tuesday night, Cornell Brooks, president of the NAACP, appeared on CNN's Erin Burnett OutFront to discuss the shooting death of Michael Brown and dismissed calls for violence by a member of Michael Brown's immediate family as inciting violence.  Burnett played video of Brown's stepfather, Louis Head, telling a crowd of protestors to "burn this bi*** down" after the grand jury decided not to indict Officer Darren Wilson and asked Brooks if "that served as a call for violence?" Rather than condemn Brown's stepfather's highly charged rhetoric, the president of the NAACP proclaimed "I don't think that was a call for violence or it caused violence."

According to the head of the NAACP

"The fact of the matter is, a single act of violence set this tragic set of consequences into motion. That being the shooting of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson. That's what, in fact, caused all of this"

Silly me, I though the tragic set of consequences was set in motion by the robbery of a convenience store by Michael Brown.
