No all is not lost and I'm not panicking.  I'm sticking to my plan to research what I think are paths to a victory condition.

I'm seriously considering just quitting my current game and restarting due to the fact that I've been overly concerned about health, and my growth is very slow (200 turns in and I have all of 3 cities).

I may even wait for the first patch.

I am also tree hugger.  "Hamonize" with me or die.
I was going for the Transcendence victory.  Almost done with the Flower Dome but when I captured a faction's capital, it was apparently the last one and I was awarded the victory.  You apparently don't need to eliminate them, just capture their original capitals, not even their new capitals when they lose the original.

Does the AI play with the same rules as yourself? I always seem to find that in these sorts of games the Ai factions will suddenly have all kinds of buildings and units and your forever playing catch up which I just don't enjoy..|I prefer a more sedate pace and one where the AI can only do the things I can do.

On the normal level, "Mercury" in this game, you and the AI play on a level field.

I definitely made it past the first 48 hours when the cravings to buy this game were the worst.  I've made it through the withdrawal and am confident now that I can wait until the game goes on sale before getting it.  Seems like it is a lot of fun based on all of your comments, but I'm saving my money for some other gaming goodness that is just around the corner now.   8)

The AI is better the higher the difficulty level, just with any other Civ game. They research and build crap much faster the higher it goes.

I don't know I'm bored. I miss all the choices of the type of government I was going to have communist socialist democratic constitutional republic monarchy etc. etc... I missed all the different types of religions that I might impose upon my civilization. You're basically I have three choices kill the aliens make humans better than the aliens or get along with the aliens  that's about it
