This seems like a huge change to the conquest part of the game?

I don't know.  I never played the game before now and when I got it I got all the substantial DLC (El Dorado, Art of War, Better Trade) except for Common Sense.

I have a tendency to mess with games rather than play the campaigns as designed.  The El Dorado DLC allows the player to customize a country and/or randomize the world.  I just built a customized Egypt (no more Mamelukes) and went from there.  Currently the Republic is falling apart, but it did beat Yemen in a small war and is closely allied with one of its former enemies -- the big Shi'ite regime in Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf.  Revolts are breaking out all over the Levant, but so far Egypt is not doing too much more than building up technically and drifting toward a despotic regime of some kind.
