Also - it seems kind of weird having the locations lying horizontal on the "board". I don't like it and I place them vertically. We have to read them after all.

Yeah, that play mat layout isn't terribly good is it?  Those sideways card locations are a good example.  Fortunately we don't lose much by placing them upright and placing a column of enemy cards above them, over some of the simple tables.  :)

OK, finally playing...bottom line: really like it, but...

1: Sod the bullet dice.  Seriously  Took all of three rolls to throw them over the rail and reach for "real" d10s and d6s.  I'd suggest them as a form of punishment for the naughty Twilight 2000 gamer on your Christmas list.

2:  DVG has written some excellent sets of rules.  This is not one of them.  Any game where you're nigh half-way in before you get a turn order sequence is not a good one.  Also, the fact that all human players play simultaneously in any manner they agree -- which makes for great fun -- is far too hidden.

3:  It took a while to figure out that, unless explicitly stated otherwise, playing action cards is unlimited and without action cost.  This confusion was made worse by the play mat which includes "Play Action Card" as one of the actions that notionally consumes one of your two actions each turns.  I think what was meant was play LOCATION card that costs an action, but it doesn't say that.

4:  The game is completely playable without the expansions, but I conclude I'd rather not do so.  This, however, leads to a SILLY action deck that, as observed elsewhere, can be tough to shuffle.  My beloved has remarkable patience for this.

5:  Not all scenarios are going to be playable with 6 players...or at least not a lot of fun for the fellow who winds up with the NSP and no cards.

6:  If it's ulimately not really necessary, the mat is nice, but I was disappointed that mine came a bit crinkled.

7:  I agree with all the rules interpretations proffered above, and offer one or two of my own queries:
a:  Assuming I'm willing to pay the card cost, may I stack support cards, i.e., can I have three "Sniper Cover" cards in effect at the same time?
b:  If I use an action to draw and discard, may I play a card drawn as a result that has no action cost.  As an example, if I draw and discard with my second action, and I draw a "snap shot", may I take that shot?
c: I'm right that I'm free to spend cards on my colleagues at any time during a turn, so, if I've already played an "Advance" to lower the cost of entry to a location for myself, I'm at liberty to play a secone one for one of my allies as well so that they too may have the cost lowered?

If it sounds like I've nit-picked the game into disfavor, this is not so.  It's a fun cooperative game that isn't half as difficult as its rules suggest, plays quickly, and has a good modern combat flavor.

I'd observe in passing that it'd be a good con demo game for, oh, I dunno, ORIGINS.

Recommended.

lol

Good appraisal of the game...and the dice. The one reason I have stuck with the dice for just now was the number of 5 and 6 rolls I was getting with the 9mm bullet dice.  :))

The d6 bullet dice are okay. The other dice are not. They roll and roll and roll and the numbers are difficult to read to boot.

I think the rules mentioned that you could only apply one effect/card of a specific name in any single instance, but you could play as many different cards as you wanted/could.  I interpreted that as being the case with everything other than equipment (which is limited by the weight rating).

I would think so, if it didn't cost an action.  Can't we technically play a card at any time, if the situation & target is valid?

Yeah.. one card of the same name per character at any one time.  Related to a) I think.  :)

Although you have to pay for targeting buff cards on another character often, when that 'any character' indication is in [brackets] on the card.

That's how I've interpreted those, anyway.

My head wanted me to believe that a rule like you discuss at 7a above existed.  I cannot, however, find it.  Can you point me at it?  As I say, it makes sense that it should be there, but I'm not seeing it.

I'm just skimming through the rules real fast and this is the only concrete thing I've seen:

Skill Cards - Card Effect (pg13, Equipping)
"Soldiers are limited to one Skill card of each title."

I probably got Warfighter mixed up with some other game's rules.  I tend to learn more than one back-to-back.  But considering how scattered the Warfighter rules can be, I still get the feeling I'm missing some rules every time I skim through the manual.  At this point, I think you can play more than one Action card of the same type on one soldier during his turn. *shrug*

I Googled to check exactly what RECON meant on the Mission card - and it returned my own thread!

Thanks guys - you lot are amazing...and I am one forgetful bugger!  O0

Hi Gents,
some time has passed by, who is still playing Warfighter from time to time and loving it.
i am especially interested in the solitaire experience (for a quick game of an 1h or 2)

Are the expansion #1 #2 #3  worth the money and probably the new  #5 speedball too?
(i am at the beginning not so much interested in RU and UK  soldiers, but the Easter Mission maybe so that would add  #8 )
should i take special attention to get a re-print version? or is the first edition OK?
(i will replace the bullet d10 dice anyway with normal dice)

The reason for resurrection this thread is:
I am at the Spiel2015 next weeks, and that is a good place to probably get the game without the tremendous shipping costs that had let me shy away from ordering it when it was released.

i had saved up money for "DVG Huey Leader" to get a that fare this year, but its far from release, so that purchase will have to be postponed to the next visit in 2016, and i want to bring something nice home from the drive.

I haven't played it in a couple of months but that's not because it's not a good game, but because of other attention grabbing things (PC, rugby, modelling, cycling).

I think it's a great system and it plays very well solitaire imo. No real gripes from me regarding the game, production value or the system.

The three minor issues I have are

  • the way the board is laid out. The card orientation on the play area start off correctly (portrait) and then go landscape. IMO he didn't have to do that. I just keep the cards in portrait anyway.
  • and the lack of equipment card quantity - even with the expansion pack - it reminds me of my all time favourite Phantom Leader where there's just not enough weapon chits
  • no mounted board
None of these are show-stoppers to a great game though.

Definitely do not use the bullet dice. They are not good at all. Nice thought - but not good.

I got the Warfighter Combo Pack which I think included

  • Extra Bullet Dice
  • Plastic Soldiers
  • Reloading Card Expansion
  • Stealth Card Expansion
  • Support Card Expansion
The card expansions were worth their money. They increased the re-playability with more choice. The soldiers and bullet dice, not so.

Worth the price imo.

I should have the new War Chest in any day so I can give you feed back as I will then have the complete set.

THX for the head up JD   and i hope you Get your box before 10/8 PE  :)

i know about the mat. I have read over at BGG some people dont use  the mat at all and track timer with other means

JD in opposite to Phantom Leader where the limit of or counters is representing the stockpile at the airbase, In Warfighter there are no limit and players should 'share' the counters and weapon cards, IIRC the rules
I have seen at BGG that someone had build a sheet to print out and use as a chard for soldiers loadouts and capabilities

That'll be handy - thanks.

I knew they could be shared - but imo there's enough to track and recall throughout the game without having to remember who's sharing what kit.

Like I said - it's not a big deal...just a niggle.

It is showing it will be here by the 5th.  I will say that I own about all of DVG's stuff that Warfighter ranks up there in terms of gameplay and mechanics.  The first set of expansions are worth it imho, however I was not happy with the play mat... mainly because of the wasted space and the funky layout.  The Warchest I purchased (new mounted board, all of the second wave expansions and new Night missions) looks better.  The rules I thought were pretty poorly written/organized compared to the usual from DVG.   The game has been tough to beat, but I really like the challenge and the variety the game offers are in spades.
