Off-Steam, I'm strongly considering picking up DCS:MiG-21.  I am reluctant to throw more money into DCS mostly because I spend so little time with it.  I keep buying new stuff, sort of "stocking up" for the future when the game becomes more like something I want to fly.  I think I'm reaching the point of diminishing returns with this approach, though.  Maybe the smarter approach is to wait until DCS evolves to where I want it to go, and then buy on sale at that point.

I dunno.  Like I said, I'm thinking about it.  I probably won't.  I bought UH-1 and Mi-8 months and months ago, and I haven't even installed them yet.

What kind of missions are there for the Huey and the Mi-8 anyway? Do you insert troops and then lay down covering fire?

My exact feeling on DCS. Just not impressed with where it's at and hoping it gets better.

I've contemplated UH1, especially now that it's only $17, but I don't see myself dumping a lot of time into it.

There's a campaign for the Huey and a user made one as well, haven't played them but they seem as you suggest.  Insertion, rescue, and gunship type scenarios.  I've mostly flown it in mp missions doing all sorts of tasks, the Huey on sale is definatly worth it.

I cannot control either the Mi-8 or the Huey in DCS - they are waaaaaay too all over the place - both of them. Can't take off and if I do eventually skid off the ground, I can't land. Terrible helicopters to fly (in game) imo. They may be true to life, but I couldn't do anything with them!

I can get them back on the ground too, but it is usually with significant damage and it is never in the location I had planned. I don't fault the game for this, though, just maybe my control setup and/or my incompetence.

Anything that I can't jump into and figure out in a tutorial or a few sessions is not for me. Steel Beasts being the exception; I've operated many of the in-game vehicles in real life - these systems were designed so that the average 18 year old could jump in and figure it out.

Additionally, some of these games, including DCS, should come with the requirement to own a full flight setup, with pedals, stick, and throttle controllers. My Logitech Extreme puts me at an immediate disadvantage.

With a mere 8 hours left in the sale, I picked up something called "Leadwerks" which is a game programming engine.

I have a few ideas for games.  Discounted to $34 I felt this was a safe chance.  The videos certainly are compelling.

That does look like a good piece of kit...but I'm not interested in 3D FPS type game creating. Anything I could create in that could be done a thousand times better

I do have some interest in creating a 2D, top down, hex based, turn based game though.

I just pluncked down $18 for the complete Mount & Blade series. My intention is to get in on the North & South mod online battles. Watched some YouTube videos of them and it looks like great fun.
