Insane people can meticulously premeditate, too. He thinks black people are trying to take over the world, then goes there of all places to act on that?? That sounds like paranoia with an incidental fixation which developed when he noticed her during a fit.

Granted, we shoot incurably rabid dogs. But I think we ought to have a different attitude in doing so.

(Also granted, even if he has medications which allow him to be more rational, he might still be the kind of person who would hate black people so much he wants to kill them, and who would choose a target he's not only sure won't effectively fight back but whose murder would hurt other people the most. People can be both insane and evil at the same time. In which case their insanity shouldn't excuse them.)

I'm not interested in the mental condition of this piece of excrement. I'm not interested in seeing him get "treatment". Give him a fair trial and when he's found guilty of murdering those people, put him down.

We need to stop making excuses for cold-blooded murderers. There is evil in the world and it needs to be dealt with definitively. Don't try to figure it out, understand it, treat it etc. Deal with it. When someone crosses the line of civil behavior this extremely, this heinously, he's forfeited his right to continue living.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I do believe that we've de-funded help for the mentally ill to such a degree that cops are too often trying to deal with them (which is completely messed up and unfair to everyone involved), but this seems like a case of absolute pre-meditated murder.

Agreed on the defunding of mental health care and police having to deal with the consequences. However, nothing I've read so far about this shooting makes me believe this was a lost soul who didn't get the help he should/could have.

I read an article speculating it could have been related to the use of SSRI's - Zoloft et al, which apparently have a demonstrated record of outbreaks of violence.

In addition he was apparently a racist. Whatever the cause, this looks more like murder than a guy who slipped through the system.

Whether you kill him or put him away for the rest of his life won't make much difference to the loss of the families, Either way he's out of circulation, and they carry their loss regardless.

The big question for me is what do we take away from it, to minimise the likelihood of it happening again? For sure it will, based on past events. Race relations, the ease of gun ownership, and the death penalty are all issues that touch on this. Arguably the death penalty was no disincentive to the murders, and the fact that states using the death penalty still have murders regardless. Roof was able to get his firearm from his father as a gift, which suggests no psychological assessment was ever carried out to see if he was a fit person to be allowed such a weapon. The race issue is perhaps harder to square given the history of the area, but even so, is perhaps more of an issue for education?
