Christ this game is addictive as hell.  It appears so simple on the surface but there's just something about it.  I think the simplicity really works in its favour.  It's such a compelling game.

Its a fun game but I think their Elven Legacy/Fantasy Wars games are better (think Panzer General in a fantasy setting).

I had always hoped that they would provide a more open campaign for the Fantasy Wars stuff.  Warlock is a good start. 

The Fantasy Wars/EL series is just too straight through on-the-rails  for my tastes anymore.   They also feel almost like puzzle games when you're fighting the turn limit more than the enemy.  :-[  That was enjoyable over 15 years ago, but strategy games have become much more sophisticated these days and I've become spoiled on sandboxes with bells & whistles.

Agreed. The turn limits on the scenarios were the single worst feature in Fantasy Wars and the Elven Legacy series. I very much appreciated the fact that turn limits were missing from Warlock: Master of the Arcane.

the windows snip utility won't work in warlock and the prnt screen results just show black

Use the free FRAPS download.  It works amazingly well.  Screenshot image and then copy over to Paint.  Also you should just be able to hit F12 and Steam will take the screenshot, which of course requires you to dig through all the crazy named subfolders to find where it stuck your image.

+1 for FRAPS but like Bison said if you are in STEAM F12 should work.

This is the sort of search you'll end up with finding your Steam screenshots.

computer> C drive > Games > Steam > userdata > 53539926 > 760 > remote > 9200 > screenshots > actual screenshot

The 760 is where Steam puts all its screenshots.  The 9200 folder is an example of the individual game's screenshot subfolder.  Serious pain in the ass to find for the first time.

I just think its a more polished game. Elven Legacy is like Panzer General with troops that gain experience, gain special abilities and also earn special artifacts. Warlock is based on the Elven Legacy engine. They are both great; one is inspired by Civ and the other by Panzer General.

thanks Bison, its a great game ....  I don't think i will ever have the patience to cast the unity spell.... its swords and sorcery all the way! Oh and economy too....

I was going to supply the same link when I saw it on sale today.

Yes, the game scenarios have time limits and because of this I have a "love/hate" relationship with the game. If the scenario is designed right the "clock" gives a sense of urgency to try and achieve a "gold" victory as compared to a "silver" victory because you gain goodies such as artifacts, troops, etc... and this adds enjoyment to the experience. Unfortuntly, some of the scenarios can become brutal where you face a overwhelming forces you have to beat in a certain time frame and this is when the game can become a chore instead of being fun. But for $3.75, its a hell of a lot of gaming (one full game and three expansions/micro games).

Both Warlock and Elven Legacy were created by the same team but I still think Elven Legacy is more polished with a background story, cut scenes, better graphics (I Think), etc...

I enjoyed Fantasy General, I mean Fantasy Wars a lot when I started playing it.  But, after a while, the grind of competing against the clock got a bit repititive.  It's a very interesting fantasy adaptation of the Panzer General mechanics, but the game play just isn't very different, and after a while, I started to develop a "been there, done that" sense.

I made it about 90% through the first campaign before giving up.  I could only say I'd completed one of those campaigns if I'd actually lost the scenario, I guess...    8)
