We had snow in Norfolk once that was actually pretty heavy, but I think my daughter was only about 2-3.  My son spent his first 3 years in Iceland, so he's seen a bit of snow, plus Norfolk.  But neither of my kids has spent a lot of time in a snowy place since either was very little.

I didn't see snow until I was in 8th grade, so I can kind of relate.   ::)

Brant, Toonces, was this the first time your kids got to play in snow deep enough to have real fun?

nope, not the first time for them...  we've had snow every year here since '08 except the one year we were moving into the new house over the winter

In accordance with the prophecy, it microsleeted most of Friday on top of maybe 2ish inches. Put a nice glaze on things, took down a fluffy conifer in our back yard, but otherwise the streets were passable by Saturday before noon. (I can drive on ice and snow without much trouble anyway, but I don't intentionally drive far if I can help it. No need to dare chance to do its worst if I don't have to.)

Down 45 minutes south to visit the nieces for the weekend, where they had started building a 6 story tall snow fort and then got bored and went to go play something else. But they had a nice set of five small bricks in a genuine curve! "It must take five weeks to build an igloo!" one judged.

So we played cards and computer games and caught them mostly up on Star Wars movies. Which they have managed to watch rather out of order. (4, 7, 1, 2, 5. Bro and I both agree they should skip Ep 3 until they're a bit older, but they enjoyed my five minute summary re-enactment.) Ate dinner at IHOP last night. Felt weird to get back to snow this afternoon. A lot still on the ground at sundown -- and we didn't get a lot to start with (but, as noted, with ice reinforcement.)

Now I'm about to sleep like the dead at 8:30pm, because little nieces drink life-energy like chocolate milk, and I'm still not recovered yet.

Toonces I thought you grew up in NJ...

My dad was in the Marines, so we did a rotation between Beaufort, SC, Pensacola, and Yuma, AZ a couple of times.  When my dad got out, we moved from Yuma to NJ when I was just starting 8th grade, and that's where I did high school and college.  So, altogether I had about 10 years in NJ before I joined the Navy and went back to Pensacola, and I so I got exposed to the northeast a bit.

In about 1992, when I was in college, I helped a couple of my friends get a job at the place where I worked.  They decided to bail for spring break, and because I felt loyalty to the company, I stayed so the company wouldn't be completely boned when those guys left (I think they just up and quit the job, assholes).  So while they were gone, I decided to take the money I would have spent, went down to Sea Isle City over the weekend, bought a wetsuit and surfboard, and started my path to surfing- something I always wanted to learn how to do.  This was February in NJ.  So, from the first I've been dealing with shitty waves and cold water.

This whole thing didn't start in Hawaii, although it might seem like that sometimes.

Children actually playing outside?  :o How did you manage that? Aren't they supposed to play in the snow on their playstations these days?  ;D

Yeesh, that's a lot of snow.  I'm a little jealous -- but only a little.  :P  Anyway, everyone over there stay safe!

Staggerwing, how's the back & leg doing?  Did you take any break(s) at all while you were shoveling?

Brant's and Toonces' daughters are adorable when they're playing in the snow.  (Actually, I suspect they're adorable when they're *not* playing in the snow too, but that's neither here nor there.)

QuoteHow much snow fell on Washington D.C. during this past weekend's massive snowstorm? Officially, 17.8 inches. But the actual answer may never be known.

The Washington Post reports that the snow-measuring device used by a team of weather observers at Washington's Reagan National Airport was buried in the blizzard, leaving them with no way to record the true amount of snow for hours on end.

The error promped the National Weather Service (NWS) to announce that it will be looking into the procedures used at Reagan National, where the official snow totals for the nation's capital are recorded.

Going along with Toonces story I estimate 10 years in NJ equals roughly 5 years in thr USMC.
