The "Brexit effect" strikes as Iceland beats England in the Euro 2016. With the Iceland win it seems obvious now: World markets are falling again, wars are now breaking out, it's the end of the world... and the sun won't rise tomorrow.

well done them, lots of england didnt do this, didnt do that, werent this, werent that - simple fact is Iceland were better, wanted it more - our overpaid drama queens will just shrug, go on a luxury holiday and come back to their 250,000 a week in august

ive genuinely had it with national team, they simply cannot be arsed because theres no need to be arsed - no consequences to loss, in the league theyll be benched or transferred, for the country who gives a f***? i dont know when this shift in attitude occurred but long before kick off i said to a customer, my head says England, my heart really, really wants Iceland to win to show us up for the disgusting gravy train bunch of assholes the team is - hey and it worked!

Same thing can be said for most national teams.
Consensus is that my country (Belgium) played a good last match and most of them also play in the Premier League in England ...

Maybe Iceland was better because they aren't a part of the EU  ;D.

As you and Anguille say, Iceland was by far the better team, and you could see they wanted it more. 8)

I just think it's a very good England team.

Ask yourself this - how many players in that England squad are the featured played for their respective clubs?

I get that Iceland's aren't either, but they're not expected to be.  England's squad was not well-constucted because they lack the parts needed to build one. Rooney as a #10? Really? Is Jack Wilshire really scaring anyone? Sterling? Rashford? Dier?

Put another way - compare the 2016 England team to the 2006 World Cup team they sent.

Man fo man, aside from Rooney (who was a much better player in 2006 than today) is there anyone on the '16 Euro team you'd take ahead of the comparable player on the '06 World Cup team?

I don't disagree with you Brant. However, It's a young team. The youngest in the tournament and they - obviously I think - need to get to, and implement, a game-concept.

I mean, look at Germany, Italy, Spain Holland and Portugal. When watching these teams play you know from the get go how they build up their game.
With England as of 2016 I just didn't see that.

I don't know if it's a coaching- or a team building problem, but something is missing.

I agree that England are a young team, and they haven't transitioned well out of the Gerrard-Lampard-Terry-Ferdinand era

But Italy are playing with a largely second-choice lineup, too.  They're missing Marchisio, Montolivo, Verratti, Quagliarella (sp?), and didn't even call up Pirlo despite him towering over the last Euro tournament (they're trying to recapture the magic with an out-of-position De Rossi instead).

The Spanish are experienced, but they're just damned tired.  They couldn't have looked less interested in the Italy game, and when you figure they've all played an extra season over the past 3 years with all their extra national team commitments, they probably just deserve a break.

The French have an identity crisis, the Germans don't know where the goals are going to come from, the Welsh are trying to capture lightning-in-a-bottle, the Portuguese always flame out in the final 4, the Belgians don't like each other and can't figure out how not hate each other on the field, the Poles don't let anyone score (their opponents, or themselves), and Croatia were exposed as a one-man band who played 30 yards deeper than he should have.

So it's not like the rest of the teams out there should've been that much better than the English.

The English team hasn't developed the next generation, but it still should be good enough to compete in this fractured tournament. 
They didn't have a plan, and that's down to the coach.

people tend to play too conservatively in tournaments, but in league play, it's not uncommon to have a 4-2 scoreline.
