I WILL get into this newer SOW series next year, dammit.  Been near the top of my list for awhile, but haven't done much digital wargaming recently.

Have to admit, it looks like a great series.

Hopefully came out earlier enough where it will be included in holiday sales:)

The official forums seem pretty dead for this title (whole series).....I often wonder if they made the right decision in not continuing with the Civil War series.  I am ok with the variety, although I haven't played this series that much and haven't bought the two expansions...but if on sale during Holidays, very much likely a purchase for me.

I've spent some time with Waterloo and to be honest I much prefer the Civil War version.  I can tell you one solid reason why has to do with the couriers.  In Waterloo, for some reason, you can't assign orders to "move to" a specific map point by clicking on the map.  The best I can see is you can specify a named location, but not a specific point.  This is frustrating if you don't want to send your troops to a named place, or even worse, don't know the names of all the places on the map!

And I'll be damned if I can figure out how the campaign works.  I've followed the directions but it doesn't seem to be working so far.  Frustrating.

Although I bought the whole Waterloo smack, I find myself mostly sticking with the Civil War games for now.  A bit of buyer's remorse TBH.  If I could send Waterloo back, I would.

Same reasons why I prefer Civil War.
The reason they gave for not being able to assign orders via courier to specific map points is because they implemented a new tactical map (press N) where you can set movement coordinates.  It is functional and streamlined.  But it's not as immersive as courier and you cannot chain commands.

That said, the core game experience of Waterloo is still the same as Civil War and still enjoyable if you're not keen to do role playing ("Headquarters in the Saddle") and use the courier system -- where chaining commands is crucial when your subordinates go very far from your view and you don't want to "Take Command" yourself.

Oh god that drives me up the friggin wall to. Its the main reason I refuse to use the courier thing. Last i checked it wouldnt be that hard to scrawl out a formation on a little minimap!

To be fair, I believe the option to order a unit to "move to "a certain spot was from a mod that one of the users created. It was not in the stock vanilla game I don't believe.

The forum at the scourge of war developer site has a lot more activity than the one on matrix.  That said there has never really been too much activity there even when scourge of war Gettysburg came out.  I also preferred the Civil War variance but that's what the engine was really designed to do. I still like the Waterloo variation to th I still like the Waterloo variation to though

Was trolling around at norbsoft site and noticed this on the home page...looks like they are releasing Take Command - 2nd Manassas to Steam at some point...wonder why folks would play that over the SOW series nowadays....I owned it back in the day.

Nostalgia and return to the fabled 'good old days' like GOG tries to do with older games? It doesn't work for me but I understand that it does for others.

I guess...but typically those older games on GOG don't have modern replacements like SOW....who knows, maybe I'll even try it again depending on the cost to see how far the series has come:)
