http://www.sailsimulator.com/

this is better than flight sim or train sim, you sail boats using the wind, you can raise different sails trim them, move ropes, use the tiller, a simple button to have the sailor lean out, tack upwind,

the physics are that of real boats, I was told multiplayer picksup in the winter, but grogs sailing club could be used :)

I know I'm off topic but when you find some thing unusual grogs may want to know

forget virtual skipper 5, that is free, sail sim 5 has usable sails VS5 is dumbed down, still good just dumbed down

its made by boat engineers for real they make charts, you also learn GPS etc... this is real as it gets not to be compared to ordinary sims

Staggerwing

It's just that the renders look very similar. Nothing wrong with that.

Grim.Reaper

If reading correctly, this was actually last released in 2009-2010?

gameleaper

yes it works on old PCs I don't know when the addon was made but if you into sailing its still the best, I'm learning to sail and I can tell you its incredible, try the demo if in dought

as far as I know, no other sim has ever allowed the sail adjustments like this, and all the other things you can do is beyond most games would do.

Grim.Reaper

Sailing games just not my thing unless they are shooting at each other:)

you can ram :)

The addon updates the engine too aswell as the extra boats. I had to buy a book on sailing to figure it all out, the manual it comes with is ok, but real life knowledge works in this sim.

to give you guys an idea, when you race your not just pressing left right and accelerate like a car, its many things that are individual to the way you sail.

I'd confirm this is quite  an old game - I got it several years ago, it still looks good however and is quite easy to get the hang of, but equally difficult to get really good at - as Gameleaper said, it seems to me (a non sailor) to be quite "real world".
I do however find it extremely relaxing to play, and very challenging if you go multiplayer

I didn't even know things like you could raise a keel on some boats :) its the only sim of its kind around. learning lots

Wow...these games certainly have changed over the years.  Many years ago, I downloaded both sail simulator and either virtual skipper or virtual sailor (can't remember which).  As a former CYA sailing instructor, sailing simulator did the best at capturing the essence of small boat sailing.  IIRC, you could actually capsize in sailing simulator.  For my purposes, though, I found virtual skipper a bit more useful at the time, as I was doing a coastal cruise through the Gulf Islands (BC, Canada), and was more concerned about things like channel markers, map and chart reading, etc.

This version though does look great.

@ gameleaper - If you really want to see some interesting small yacht design, take a look at the MacGregor 26.  It features a water-ballasted hull than can be emptied to enable trailing.  Also, if you mount a 60HP engine on the back and dump the ballast water, you should be able to reach about 20 knots.  Crazy thing to see a sail boat (sails down of course) pulling a water skier.
Now, the problem is, how to divide five Afghans from three mules and have two Englishmen left over.

I will have a look thx, I like the capsizing, its a learning thing of what not to do :)

on a side note
its good have to have "those kind of sims" that if someone is interested in a new hobby so he can  learn the ropes (pun intended ;)) a little bit upfront with a PC program before maybe enlisting to an rather expensive course and getting himself kitted out for that

But on the other hand, its kind of getting really ridiculous with those sims in general, which simulate activities that can be and should be! better experienced in real life, at least once.

So what next? a hiking simulator (large parts or Utah and Arizona covered), a gardening simulator (comes with an assortment of 50 distinguished tulips, roses and hundreds of perennials), a playing with dog/cat-pet simulator (border collie is DLC only), a family stroll simulator, a breakfast eating simulator, a tobacco pipe smoking simulator, a couch sitting simulator, ... ?

Well, i am not qualified to fly a fighter plane in a life danger combat environment or be a exceptional special forces chap  going on a covered OP in a not to be named war-torn country for OPSEC reason  ...and especially not going back and for some decades in timeframe setting also, so to speak history or possible futures.
This make sense. There is no other way to come closer to this experience than simulators and upcoming VR ...but casual activities in the present ?

I bet one weekend in a real boat on some trail course on a nearby lake (or the coast) with fair weather is more rewarding than hours and hours spend in front of a glowing computer screen and just dreaming it when its so easy to have the real thing.
...ok, Cape Horn passage is a different story
