I tried as hard as possible to like the Command Ops engine, i played HTTR over and over again - i just didnt get it, man i wanted to - the praise was exceptional, COTA took the forums by storm, i was totally engrossed in the AARs and a guy on the WG forum said just buy it - there is nothing finer other than playing the game, than not playing the game, looking out of the window and working out if you sent an MG company here instead of there you could that now unlock the bridge to blah blah blah - it sounded perfect.......

i still didnt get it. I read, watched and read again the reviews of BFTB Command Ops but there wasnt anything in there that made me think i would get it - ive even read 'i didnt get it, but now i do and its awesome' posts but still not me.............

But now? now i feel this could be it, a zoomed in platoon level, Close Combat meets Command Ops game - less abstraction, more association with units, this could be it...............

Command Ops in all its incarnations is, indeed, stupendiferific (technical term).  It is its proper use of map scale, topography, and frontage that, in part, makes it magnificent.

At this scale, I probably would faint in glee then rise up, arm myself with alcohol and hot pockets, and not be seen for days...

Thanks for sharing this.

Hot Pockets? My heart just threw up a little. Please try something a bit healthier...like Slim Jims!

Undercovergeek,   The funny thing is, I felt the same way about Command Ops engine...I read the forums, asked questions and it all just sounded fantastic.  I finally pulled the trigger a bit after BftB came out and really, really wanted to love it...but I could not get into it...I was missing something.   To me it seemed more like watching a war game than playing a war game.   I was disappointed and kept reading the forums and wondering what I was missing.   Finally I forced myself to play 3 scenarios to completion and sat with the manual....by the third scenario I realized I was actually becoming engrossed and it finally felt like playing instead of watching.   Now, Command Ops is one of my favorite engines and I whole heartedly enjoy and recommend BftB and its add-on.   Still not sure what the block for me was...but it was a struggle well worth the effort.  Smaller scale tactical is my favorite type of war game so I too am really, really looking forward to the upcoming title!
Kind Regards,
Harry

@gabeeg, I think the block is often relinquishing control to the sub-ordinate AI. If all your gaming has been chit shuffling and micromanagement of whole "fronts", then getting into the mindset of a high level commander, and relying on your HQ's to plan and execute their moves correctly is tricky. I think, personally, it's easy if you've a strategy gaming background with RTS'es such as Kohan under you belt, because you take the higher approach to it all. Or perhaps Grand Strategists also might be better with this sort of approach. I don't know.

Ultimately, the Command Ops games look "chit shuffly", but theyre not. They're sort of high level planning maps, with a "Frozen Synapse" level of control over placement, formation and movement, but NOT actually over who you engage.

I particularly like the way it unfolds, and you have to make decisions to re-route troops, or hold some back, and recycle troops to prevent battle fatigue. The maps are also a major part in the decision making process, which is not often the case with more abstracted wargames.

I'm not so hyped about this tactical level of control, especially seeing as they're keeping the operational style markers.. but, I might be surprised. I'm not quite sure anyone would choose this over the likes of Combat Mission, but then again I should leave judgement until I've actually played it.

as a CM player, i would say im looking forward to seeing it in action - i think its probably one tier above CM, youre never going to get down and dirty at eye level and see the rolling fields, walls and buildings will provide no cover or obstacle - theyll just be flavour - im looking forward to it mainly because, as you say i feel disjointed, not in command, but feel that could be returned at small unit tactics level

Apologies if this has been asked/answered, but is Legends of the Blitzkrieg going to be an expansion like HTTR or a completely new game based on the Command Ops engine?

I didn't have the stones to pull the trigger for Command Ops during this past Matrix sale.  My biggest concern was ending up like undercovergeek stated in the first post.  I think I have been conditioned to micro manage and am not sure I could give up that control.

That being maybe by the next sale I might have talked myself into getting it.

Cyrano well described my enthusiasm and likely behavior after this releases.

I am torn between longblade's and his culinary advice, so I compromising with tater tots as the healthier alternative to hot pockets, but cheesy ones because they're not (healthier). Plus, they'd be cheesy.

I think it's new because the scale is different.

They have a demo you can try before you buy...might be worth giving it a shot since no risk.
