With all this large, continent spanning integration, I can't imagine the next historical won't have the same expandability.

I agree that they didn't do the age of musketry very well with Empire or Napoleon, but I can already see the potential for them thinking of an entire earth map in a Victorian Era Total War.

And to be fair to CA, they did really do the Victorian era well with Fall of the Samurai.

I don't know. Even today the AI does sooooo much better tactically when operating sword/spear Melee units vs line of fire. Just can't seem to get the wholeinear combat thing down. I'd like to see them stick with pre 1700. Some firearm units are fine...but when it's all guns? Bad things man, bad things

Well, my ideal next TW title is Medieval 3, but CA has been stone adamant that they're not going in that direction despite demand.  So at this point, I'm just taking from the best available options that aren't that game.

For those who know the lore, is it all jungle in this new world?  Will that get in the way of gameplay?

I'd say 19th century is about as far as they could push it while still keeping some sliver of reality.  Even then, it's shaky.

TW's battle engine was obviously meant to portray line-dominated warfare but it's generally been pretty flaky with lines of musket armed infantry.

Scale and some other things have been problematic.  But I think the most annoying has been how the tactical AI controls those musket-armed units.  As an example, in Empire and Napoleon, they had a small range-to-target band where they would stand & fire, but all too often they'd fire once and then charge into melee - or not even fire before doing so.  Because the infantry lines also moved way too fast, and even short quick moves by the shooter or target would trigger their melee routines once that very thin "stand & fire" range band was out.  A few factors came into play, here, and it made the battles resemble Roman Legionary doctrine.  Albeit with musket & bayonet but minus all the armor.  Just didn't play out as it should.

They slowly improved that through later games, but the root problems are still there.

The big mods lessened these issues by extending gunfire range quite a bit, and slowing down infantry movement speeds.  It's the only way to play them since they act less like spearmen.

I'd still be up for trying anything TW, featuring muzzle loaders and earlier, but I'd fully expect to require mods to fix the battles.  It's not unusual to feel the need for mods in the TW series, but most are just improvements for me & not major fixes.

The earlier periods just seem to work out better in the Total War engines.  I'd like to see a new Medieval along with Ancient China.  A Bronze Age one would be something appreciably different too.

Ick.  Are you serious?

With the temples and the jungle -- why can't we just have some real people?  For one thing they might come with less laborious music.

I pretty much agree with you across the board.  While a Victorian Era game would be good for depicting some of the colonial wars where numbers were smaller and scale was limited, I can't see how conflicts like the Crimean War, and Wars of German Unification wouldn't just seem woefully underdone and oversimplified.

Again, the consensus seems to gravitate towards a demand for Medieval 3, with Renaissance and Enlightenment not far behind, or even all included.  I can't for the life of me see why CA has been so opposed to going in this direction.

I get the concept of wanting to keep the series fresh, but every time the fans are polled or the question comes up, the hard to ignore fact is that everyone's asking for Medieval 3 to be the title, myself included.  I hope CA takes note of that after the next historical title, whatever it may be.

There is an excellent mod for Medieval 2 that covers the English Civil War. And I agree with the above post that says Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai is the best. My favorite TW of all time.

Warhammer Total War always tempts me to buy it. I finally did and initially enjoyed it for the unit variety. However the battle were just so simplistic and such blob fests (no control over formations and nothing interesting except making sure you are all into the brawl instead of holding your line) that I got bored fairly quickly. I really love the hype but I really don't think the game has enough tactical battle complexity to hold my interest. That and the fact that the only Human faction I was interested in turned out to be a cavalry only affair. High Elves have me tempted once again. But knowing this will be $70 australian to purchase I will probably wait a year if possible until it is at a reasonable price because really all I want to do is dabble and look at the pretty units. Because I know the story and game mechanics are pretty cheap and nasty when it comes to it. I really wanted some interesting military formations. I guess I have to wait to see what they do with the historical version.
