Episode 5 felt like a step back. It was full of sci-fi and dramatic cliches. Once again, it felt like a warmed over episode of TNG. The jokes are awful and should be dumped entirely. I wouldn't mind a humorous element if it were actually funny. And what a colossal waste of Charlize Theron and Jonathan Frakes (director for the episode).

With STD picking up steam, I doubt Orville can last more than a season unless it improves greatly and quickly.

Finally binge caught up on this. I'm enjoying it enough to keep watching.
The humour is typical Seth stuff, like A Million ways to Die in the west.
I just see it a being average joes on a starship. You just know there had to be such ships even in the ST universe. Not the cream of the crop....

Interesting that you mention Million Ways to Die. I thought that was a huge miss too.

I'm beginning to wonder if he can pull off humor that isn't over-the-top crass.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't like Million Ways. It was a great disappointment.

From the sounds of things, the Orville is slowly sliding that way, too. I haven't watched an episode since the baby-sex-change one.

But... Charlize Theron  :dreamer:  :smitten:

The Irresponsible Captain Tyler would have been interesting to try adapting. ;)

I was pretty okay with the Theron ep. Classic Trekian story, with a surprisingly subtle finale (which might or might not ever go anywhere, rather like classic non-DS9 Trek. ;) ) Plot had a few holes to keep things going, but no more than for typical Trek stories. Humor is hit and miss as always, but at least it does hit sometimes. Headcanon that this is a nominally series RPG group (maybe LARPing along) with players who occasionally lapse into unexpected asides (a la Darth and Droids), keeps the seams from falling too much apart for me. Enjoyed Theron's guest role; I usually like her, though not always her role or the films she stars in.

That was by far the best one so far.

To be clear, I'm not down on this show to the point of giving up on it. Just feels like it could be so much more. The pieces are there for a Galaxy Quest level of good, but for some reason it's not there yet. I'm still hopeful it can get to that level.

I don't think he wants to make it a Galaxy Quest though...

mirth

That's good because he's not even close.

I wasn't thinking of a direct equivalent, but more that the overall quality could be on a Galaxy Quest level. So far that isn't the case either. None of the elements in Orville are working all that well. The writing and story telling is mediocre. The characters are stereotypes. The humor mostly falls flat.

Like I said, the pieces are there - solid cast, excellent production values. It just needs to be better. Very reminiscent of the first couple seasons of TNG.

WallysWorld

I'm still watching the series and enjoying it. Once you get to know the characters and their personalities, the show is fun to watch. Tonight's episode was quite good with a foreboding ending that you usually don't see in comedies.

I've accepted that this show is going to be mostly 'meh' with an ocassional bright spot. Don't see it going more than a season or two at most.

GDS_Starfury

maybe you just dont have a sense of humor.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

MetalDog

Then I don't either.  That show is terrible and doesn't even try to be funny.  And maybe that's the point.  Maybe Macfarlane is trying to do this straight up.  If so, then it's just a cheap ST:NG ripoff.  And if, somehow, he IS trying to be funny, then, it's a complete failure.

Jason Ive come to the conclusion that you could analyze a blow job into half star yelp review.

"a bit of teeth and not enough throat, kind of dry and no ball fondling.  .5 star and not worth the $20."
