I went to see it thinking it was something other than it was. I thought it was about the organisation of the Detroit riots in 67. It wasn't. It was about general racial tensions and the authorities reaction to the riots.

I really liked it. I found it very moving and also a crying shame that people have so much hate for the difference between the colour of their skin.

It deserves to be pointed out that given the subject and the time, alot of factual information wasn't available and the film acknowledges the fact that it used alot of sources from around the period...so some "artistic" licence was present.

The first thing I would say is when the movie started it showed what I cannot bare...rioters destroying property, looting, attacking emergency services. When I see it, it makes me sick to my stomach. Don't you fuckers know you're all fighting the same thing (or at least should be)? How are you actually going to help yourself by destroying what's around you? By robbing your own kind? Your beef is with the law enforcement - why attack emergency services that would quickly help you should you need it.

However - after that disgust from me, I fell into the "WTF" thought provoking movie and wondered how people can treat others in the way they did purely because of the colour of their skin.

I know nothing of the riots and, in particular, the events at the Motel Algiers in Virginia Park, Detroit. The film basically showed an under pressure Detroit Police Department, State Police and National Guard struggling to keep the streets safe but focused specifically on a particular event - that of the murder of 3 black men and the beating and intimidation of others, including two white females who were present in the Motel Algiers.

Anyhoo - it's a film. It's also a film, by it's own admission, without all the hard facts and filled in where it could with first hand accounts and other sources.

A good watch and quite moving.

Thanks JD - I have wanted to see Detroit. I plan on watching it soon. Could a movie on the 1992 LA riots be that far behind?

A lot of people link the 67 riots to the downturn of Detoit and its eventual bankruptacy.
