Wargame: AirLand Battle unveiled in its first in-game teaser!

Today, we are proud to unveil in a first video teaser Wargame: AirLand Battle, the sequel to Wargame! Planned for released for 2013, Wargame: AirLand Battle will bring the series to a brand new dimension. Today's video gives a glimpse of the spectacular new features to come!

While the first Wargame made a splash with its powerful engine, Wargame: AirLand Battle will be the series's leap forward by bringing a level of detail never before seen in a real-time strategy game. The new version of the IRISZOOM Engine(tm) will display spectacular graphics with a wide variety of units, scenery, and impressive topography reproduced from satellite maps, all of which are visible in today's teaser.

Just like its predecessor, Wagame: AirLand Battle takes players through a series of conflicts commanding NATO and Warsaw Pact troops between 1975 & 1985 at a turning point of the Cold War. In this episode, war rages in Northern Europe, notably Scandinavia, whose architecture and magnificent landscapes are faithfully recreated in the game.

Wargame: AirLand Battle allows players to command all military resources of the Cold War era from tanks to planes. A total of 150 planes strengthen the playable arsenal of the game, from fighters to bombers to electronic warfare planes. Four new nations and their vehicles join the original eight from the first installment, making a total of over 750 vehicles and combat units rendered in realistic detail! Wargame: AirLand Battle also brings authenticity to the next level thanks to a new weapons system, better handling of fire effects, and a new Urban Combat Interface (UCI) allowing for battle inside cities.

The solo campaign is composed of several new dynamic campaigns, during which players manage all aspects of battle by leading each squad of the Theater of Operation and making good use of reinforcements and strategic support. Wargame: AirLand Battle still allows customization of armies in solo and multiplayer modes thanks to the 'Deck' system, which is now being enhanced with an integrated 'viewer'. Ultimately, each decision made will have an impact on the tactical outcome of battles and evolution of the global conflict! Prepare to re-enter the Cold War in 2013!

I like the idea of this game (the new one) but a lot will depend on execution.  What I mean is that I really like Wargame: EE quite a bit.  And, I sort of like War Over Vietnam (HPS) and Flight Commander 2, but the execution of both of those just doesn't hit my sweet spot.

So if these guys can crack the code so that we can have a decent representation of top-down air combat I could be very happy.  Phantoms vs MiGs?  What's not to like?!

Hmmm...good point. It would be nice if there is some complexity and even a bit of authenticity when it comes to the air combat, rather than it just being one giant eye-candy furball.

I almost pulled the trigger on getting Wargame: EE duruing the STEAM summer sale but it never was discounted enough for my liking.  I am still on the fence about whether or not I would like the game.  Hopefully when the expansion comes out they will drop the price of the original to entice buyers.

Is a good game but is a "consume" game, you played it very much the first month, month and half; after you reach to peak of "what you can do" and leave it because the matchs continue to be always identical. This expansion appears to me only like a good evolution but I doubt in general I can feel it like a new game

I'm stuck in the campaign.  I find it too fast paced and punishing like your regular RTS (enemy unit spam).

I have a question about the original Wargame: EE and I figure I'll ask here rather than start a new thread.

Is there a single player skirmish mode?  All I can seem to find on the SP front is the campaign.  I'd like to play random matches against the AI but I can't seem to figure out how to do this...or if it's even possible.

Host your own MP map and pay against AI only.

Oh man, thank you so much for that.  What a strange way to do single player!

I am loving this game a LOT more now.  What a fun little sandbox this is!

The Wargame AirLand Battle website is live now.

I spent a few minutes browsing around on it.  I'm sure I'm going to buy this, but it comes across as not being sure if it's a simulation or a game.  There seems to be a lot of thought given to quantifying the units (defense, firepower, etc.) but then there are a lot of "game" features as well.

One of the things I did see that I like is the ability to order your ground units into formations.  That is definitely something I want to see.

Anyway, I've dabbled in Wargame: EE a bit in single player, and I like it, but the deck building and unlocks have hampered my enjoyment.  It's fun, but not exactly what I'm looking for in a game.  I'm hoping the improvements to AirLand increase my enjoyment.

log in and click solo, at the very top of all the operations is a bar that says play against AI, click that and there ya go.

I've been hanging around the W:AB forums lately and was surprised last night to see a tweet from the devs that an unspecified May release date has been set. Today, the news broke, along with some new screenies:

QuoteWargame AirLand Battle: The German Units roll out in screenshots

Our recon teams are informing us about a huge troop movement in Germany! Wargame AirLand Battle, the sequel to the spectacular real-time strategy game Wargame European Escalation, today presents its German combat units, through 6 new screenshots.

After unveiling its British units, today's spotlight is now the vehicles and the combat units from West-Germany, but also those from East Germany. Wargame takes place in the middle of the Cold War, while Germany is still torn in two : on one side, the FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) siding with NATO. On the other side, the GDR (German Democratic Republic), siding with the Warsaw Pact.

Today's screenshots show us units from the two Germanies. Connoisseurs will easily recognize some of the new units of the FRG, especially its aircraft composing its air force, the Luftwaffe, such as the F-104G "Starfighter" and the Panavia Tornado; we can see them flying over the immense urban areas of Wargame’s new maps. On the GDR side, we can observe that most of the vehicles are of Soviet origin. This allows the GDR to access tried and tested equipment, known for its efficency and reliability, such as its own variants of the T-72 main battle tank. The GDR has also access to a large number of combat aircraft, such as the Mig-17 we can see in the screenshots, and among other aircraft, including variants of the Mig-21 that, even though they are not the most advanced planes in the conflict, can be useful in a broad range of situations when used wisely.

On both sides of the Iron Curtain, German troops are now departing to Scandinavia, in order to be the first at the frontline when the conflict starts with Wargame AirLand Battle's release in May.

About Wargame AirLand Battle

Released in early 2012, Wargame: European Escalation by Eugen Systems managed to become the new benchmark in real-time strategy games, praised by critics and players alike. Wargame: AirLand Battle is about to bring the series to the next level as a full-fledged sequel!

Between 1975 and 1985, war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact is still raging, reaching Northern Europe, notably Scandinavia, whose architecture magnificent landscapes are faithfully recreated in the game. While the first Wargame made quite an impression with its powerful engine, Wargame: AirLand Battle is making a huge leap forward with its visuals, bringing a level of detail never before seen in a real-time strategy game. Flat relief and lack of variety is now a thing of the past, as the new version of the IRISZOOM Engine(tm) displays spectacular graphics, with a huge variety of units, scenery and impressive topography reproduced from satellite maps.

Command all the military resources of the Cold War era, from tanks to planes which make an outstanding entrance in the series! A total of 150 planes strengthen the playable arsenal of the game, from fighters to bombers to electronic warfare planes. Four new nations and their vehicles join the original eight from the first game, making a total of over 750 vehicles and combat units rendered in realistic detail with new textures! In Wargame: AirLand Battle, realism is also strengthened thanks to a new weapons system, better handling of fire and its effects, and a new Urban Combat Interface (UCI) allowing for battle inside cities block by block to take them over.

The solo part of the game is composed of several new dynamic campaigns, during which you will manage all aspects of the battle. Lead each squad of the Theatre of Operation, and make good use of your reinforcements and strategic support. Each decision you make has an impact on the tactical outcome of battles, and also impacts the evolution of the global conflict! Wargame: AirLand Battle still allows you to customize your own army in solo and multiplayer modes, thanks to the 'Deck' system, which is now being enhanced with an integrated 'viewer'.

There are a bunch of beta vids now available, too:

I am waiting for some more detail on the dynamic SP campaign, but if it is as good as it sounds, this is going to be a Day 1 purchase for me.
