I tried the free weekend, but I just can't seem to enjoy it.  :'(
A weekend just doesn't seem to be enough time to learn everything that it takes to become proficient enough to pull me in.

Except for tanks I guess I've never been a big first person shooter fan, even though I do like watching games like these from this perspective.
A Corporate Executive,a Democrat and a Republican walk into a room. The CEO walks in first and notices 10 cookies on a plate and pockets 9 of them, then turns to the Republican and whispers in his ear  and says "The Democrat is trying to steal your cookie".

It does take practice because the game is so unforgiving.   When I first tried the original RO, I remember wanting to dance a jig after I finally got my first kill!   :D  It took so much effort compared to the run and guns of mainstream shooters.

I speak as one who has destroyed himself a score of times.  I am, Mr. Engle, a veteran corpse. We are all corpses here! This rendezvous is one of the musical graveyards of the town. Caters to zombies hopping around with dead hearts and price tags for souls." - Angels Over Broadway

I've actually ended up on Tank-only maps in RO2.  They were fun for a bit, but the infantry combat is the most fun to be had with it IMO.

Now that the servers are filling up I've also discovered a few tank-only maps.  Also, I am finally getting a chance to try all the different roles.  When there were less people playing, all the specialized roles were very hard to get because they were the first to get snatched up.

Really hoping this wave of publicity sticks around permanently.

I think the thing that really is shining through for me is how fantastic the maps are in this game.  I don't just mean the technical side of balancing a map, but how lived-in the maps feel.  That is what always bugged me with Battlefield 3: even though DICE would constantly boast how big their maps were, they never felt real to me.  It always seemed to me like we were fighting on a Hollywood sound stage.  Buildings were little more than shells with maybe a (unrealistically) bare room or two, or it was just wide open spaces of rocks and trees.  Nothing felt populated.

The maps in RO2, on the other hand, all feel like they are real places.  Here's one from Rising Storm:

At least you could tell this was a functioning Japanese facility at one time, unlike the countless empty warehouses in BF3.   ::)

Or this:

Not only are apartment buildings enterable, and with multiple levels no less, but you find all the accouterments of  life in them, even a bathtub.  Compare that to BF3's one or two room buildings, with each room as big as a closet, and absolutely no furniture in them.   ::)

RO2 also gets scale right: a big factory should look like a big factory!  And be big on the inside, too!

I liked BF3, but there are parts of RO2/RS that puts DICE to shame.

All this also makes the battles that much more epic because you feel like you are fighting for a real place and not a Hollywood sound stage that was created just for destruction.

You're right about the maps.  They certainly have personality.

I never understood why people regularly played servers with Custom created maps.  I thought those sucked compared to the originals.

The Ostfront maps feel like they are right out of Stalker at times.   8)

Yeah.  I think people like to help beta test those maps with the idea that they can say they helped if the map gets picked as an official map.
