OK, kind of an odd topic, but I was looking at a website to buy my mother a big faced cat t-shirt and stumbled across these. Thought they looked pretty neat and maybe some of you might be interested in them.

Here's a sample t-shirt (there are many others).  Looks like they're all about $20.

p.s.  I'm not affiliated in any way with this site (haven't even bought from them yet, but will pick up some of the cat faced Ts soon for Mom and wife).

Apparently this site knew I had hit it to look around, b/c when I jumped over to SWJ (in a new window, mind you...  not from the same window or a link at the t-shirt site) there was an ad for themountain.com running.

Now, the bonus to you is that there was a discount code on the ad, so if you order anything, use "TK15" (no quotes) and save 15%.  Treat it as their cost for stalking me online.

That kind of online marketing is really taking off. You'll probably see many other similar ads and offers. There's on company, Acxiom, that really specializes in it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/17/technology/acxiom-the-quiet-giant-of-consumer-database-marketing.html?pagewanted=all

Here's the basics of how they track you:

QuoteSCOTT HUGHES, an up-and-coming small-business owner and Facebook denizen, is Acxiom's ideal consumer. Indeed, it created him.

Mr. Hughes is a fictional character who appeared in an Acxiom investor presentation in 2010. A frequent shopper, he was designed to show the power of Acxiom's multichannel approach.

In the presentation, he logs on to Facebook and sees that his friend Ella has just become a fan of Bryce Computers, an imaginary electronics retailer and Acxiom client. Ella's update prompts Mr. Hughes to check out Bryce's fan page and do some digital window-shopping for a fast inkjet printer.

Such browsing seems innocuous — hardly data mining. But it cues an Acxiom system designed to recognize consumers, remember their actions, classify their behaviors and influence them with tailored marketing.

When Mr. Hughes follows a link to Bryce's retail site, for example, the system recognizes him from his Facebook activity and shows him a printer to match his interest. He registers on the site, but doesn't buy the printer right away, so the system tracks him online. Lo and behold, the next morning, while he scans baseball news on ESPN.com, an ad for the printer pops up again.

That evening, he returns to the Bryce site where, the presentation says, "he is instantly recognized" as having registered. It then offers a sweeter deal: a $10 rebate and free shipping.

It's not a random offer. Acxiom has its own classification system, PersonicX, which assigns consumers to one of 70 detailed socioeconomic clusters and markets to them accordingly. In this situation, it pegs Mr. Hughes as a "savvy single" — meaning he's in a cluster of mobile, upper-middle-class people who do their banking online, attend pro sports events, are sensitive to prices — and respond to free-shipping offers.

Correctly typecast, Mr. Hughes buys the printer.

I take great pleasure in seeing many ads that fail to offer any interest. Each time I do my faith that humans are smarter than machines is incremented up.

Unfortunately there is a downside. Lately Amazon has been a complete fail in offering me anything remotely interesting. That's the one place where I would actually like to have some decent books put in front of me.

Ever since I started browsing the Grogheads CafePress page it's been hitting me with banner ads all over tha Interwebz.

Yeah, researching the camo schemes of Panther tanks got Amazon to serve me up all sorts of uninteresting history of <ahem> infamous German units during the war. Not exactly what I want associated with my account, but I figure by now I'm already on DHS' radar for no good reason anyway, so it can't hurt to spam my electronic profile with more spurious crap.

Clear your cookies and browser cache regularly. And don't stay logged into FB and other crap while you browse. That's how they do most of the tracking.

I stay out of FB almost altogether. The rest I don't really care enough about to worry. I just like ridiculing stupid stuff when the opportunity presents itself ;)

And 60 mm mortar rounds. That would be helpful.
