The user reviews are pretty good. After reading through them, I am very tempted...

I took the plunge. I've not regretted it.

If you choose to play an unlanded adventurer it turns the game into a roleplaying game, with the option to gain land later and even become aristocracy. You can scheme, fight or talk your way through events and life.

You can choose to recruit followers, and then your band of merry men and women can choose contracts from patrons, gain favours from them, become a band of mercenaries, bandits or just wandering adventurers, move camp, travel the world and gain skills etc. You can appoint your followers to positions within your group (like at court), and upgrade your camp (the upgrades remain even if you move camp). You can gain status or infamy (the trait 'gallows-bait') with different levels of banditry or renown. You can rename your group and design their coat of arms.

In my opinion, it expands the game greatly in scope and enjoyability. If you already like CK III, I'd recommend it.

In my first play-through, my character fathered 5 children, lost a wife, got another, caught the lover's pox after visiting a brothel after his first wife passed away (he won't do that again) and travelled across Europe, making camp near Athens, Northern France and Finally back to England. He made a bunch of contacts and friends all across Europe. He's settled in England, and I'm considering asking the Pope for a claim on land. I called some favours in from patrons and now have some troops I can raise just in case I can press the claim in future.

That synchs with the reviews. I'm in. Thankfully today is payday...:)

This is a bit goofy but it shows the adventurer feature:

Must resist:  Accumulating games faster than I can play the backlog of 50 games I bought over last year that still have not been played.

I still haven't played CK2 which I pre-ordered shortly before Paradox switched to Steam!  :uglystupid2:

I'll give this a shot sooner or later, but I'm mainly waiting for the Game of Thrones modders to incorporate these features.  Landless adventuring would be perfect in that world.
A War of a Madman's Making - a text-based war planning and political survival RPG

It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge.  War endures.  As well ask men what they think of stone.  War was always here.  Before man was, war waited for him.  The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.  That is the way it was and will be.  That way and not some other way.

If they made nothing but WWII games, I'd be perfectly content.  Hypothetical matchups from alternate history 1980s, asymmetrical US-bashes-some-3rd world guerillas, or minor wars between Upper Bumblescum and outer Kaboomistan hold no appeal for me.

I guess it's sort of nice that the word "tactical" seems to refer to some kind of seriousness during your moments of mental clarity.

All right, I sank some time into the new DLC and I absolutely freaking love it.  I made myself a Gaelic Tony Soprano, who's now married to a master seductress and has quite the band of thieves going around committing crimes all across Britain, beating up helpless peasants for their food and heisting treasuries out from under petty lords.  I'm getting a bit of a reputation for being a local cutthroat, so I'm curious where that's gonna lead.  As Ian mentioned, it really expands the hell out of the roleplay options, and in some ways marching around the map doing jobs a la Mount and Blade is even more fun than sitting around in a castle waiting for stuff to happen.

This is officially how I will start every new game going forward.

Are there any other DLCs that should be had, as well?

IMO, the only other essential DLC is Tours & Tournaments, plus any specific regional DLCs you want like the Northern Lords or Iberia DLC.  Some of the other ones add neat features, like the Royal Court and Wards & Wardens DLCs, but they're rather inessential.

Well, now I'm wanted all across Britain and I've been forced to pick up camp and sail the English Channel.  Time to start my exploits in France!

Funny enough, I picked the swept-back Jarl hair for my character since it looked the closest to Tony's hair, and now that I've hit 30 he's starting to bald and he REALLY looks like Tony!

EDIT: D'oh.... Just as I posted this, I wrapped up my "one last job" heist in Wales before crossing the channel.  Bastards caught me.  Had to pay a 100 gold ransom to free myself, then another 50 to free my wife, and another 10 gold for each of my 3 co-conspirators who got caught.  Lucky he accepted instead of hanging me.

This update really turned CK3 into a proper crime simulator!

I didn't realise you could make characters that exceed the point total allowed at the start! I thought the game wouldn't allow you to start if you went over the points allowed! I have some ideas for overpowered characters...

I would recommend two mods - Community Flavour Pack and Better Barbershop. They don't change game mechanics at all, the flavor pack adds more armour and costume choices and the barbershop offers more options to view and edit character appearance, if you like that sort of thing.  They are both on the 'most subscribed' STEAM workshop tab and are always kept up to date with the current game version.
