Playing and falling in love with the new Xcom, makes me want to find a similar turnbased style tactical combat game that I can play on my laptop easily.. Does anyone have opinions on which of these two is the better choice? Also is there some World War 2 version as well? I thought I saw post the other day mentioning it being on GOG, but can't for the life of me find it..

I bought the original xcom awhile ago, but the movement kind of bummed me out, other than though thought it was a cool game though, so looking for something that style, but a little more modern, so it won't be too resource heavy on the laptop, but will still be a lot of fun!

there is a WW2 one, but I'm afraid the name escapes me

Is Silent Storm the one with Nazi exosuits? Any other 'exotic' hardware or units?

That was the one I was thinking of...Silent Storm! Doesn't look that great actually.

What about the Commandos series?

I really enjoyed one of the Commando's series.. the one that began where you are attacking the island.. Every misssion was a puzzle, very challenging a lot of fun! But I'm looking for something turn based like the xcom Style..

so the three choices are

Fallout 2
Jagged Alliance 2
Silent Storm

One of these stand far above the rest?

My memory let me down - I thought Commandos was turn based :(

Soldiers at War (1998) was a turn based WW2 squad war game.

If you're looking for a game that's more of a purely tactical experience, Fallout : Tactics would probably fit better than Fallout 2, which is a full on RPG.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate was another turn based squad game from SSI & Random Games.

That one doesn't run well at all on WinXP, and runs on Win7 with some major problems.  :-[

I recommend Silent Storm because it has more advanced features than the older ones.  Hell, the destructible environments and ragdoll physics alone make it far more advanced.  It's the full package, and if you don't like the Panzerklein steampunk power armor & laser stuff then there's a mod to remove all that sci-fi stuff that shows up in the late game.

Fallout 2 and JA2 are nice games, but their age shows these days.  I'd say give Fallout 2 a shot if you want to fly solo and actually have some interaction with NPCs and more varied things to accomplish.  All these games are tactical RPGs but they differ a bit in style.

I did notice silent storm was a few years newer.. so went with that... Also went for Fallout 2.. thanks for the replies all!
