War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition...what's stopping you?

I wonder if it will be cheaper on steam? Wait it's not on steam. War in the East is.
Is this WEGO. Or do ships get to evade each other by taking turns that let the chase become less dynamic?
I want to get this as a mate really wants opponents for it in his time zone here down under.

Hope the steam sales somehow make this one cheaper.

WitP:AE is a very hard, very time-consuming game.  It has a horribly antiquated UI, doing simple things takes many clicks.  It is micro-management hell.  It has a lot of very confusing, non-intuitive rules for just about everything. 

It is a fantastically ambitious and rewarding game, but it is not for the feint of heart, and it requires a certain amount of commitment to learn the rules and suffer through the UI in order to get at the gem underneath. 

I have seen it on sale a number of times.  Hold out for one of the big Matrix sales and it will almost certainly be 30-50% off.

I've always just jumped in on the Grand Campaign.  I wish someone had finished the AI for the May 1942 start, which was my favorite in vanilla.

I'm thinking this time around to just go with Guadalcanal.  That's still a good 200 turns, but with the smaller amount of map and forces I might be able to complete it over the summer.

Uncommon valor is another older version of WITP with smaller scenarios (think coral sea etc)  you might find that available cheaper to get a feel for the game

I really liked Uncommon Valor.  I gave my copy away to...ah I can't remember his name anymore, but he always had a baseball player as his avatar.  Anyway, WitP Original had some smaller scenarios, and so I felt that really made Uncommon Valor redundant.  I kind of wish I had held onto it now, though.  It's a much more manageable game for sure.

Sounds like UV needs some workarounds to get working in Windows 10.  I might be willing to try that if it goes on sale for $10.

Has anyone tried playing UV or WitP using some flavor of linux and WINE?
I wonder if some of the old-games-on-WIN10 issues could be solved that way, either dual boot or second comp, now that using older versions of Windows has become a big security issue.

Even the newer versions of the game have a scenario that covers the UV game doesn't it?  I never played the grand campaign, just the "shorter scenarios.  Its been years since I played, but I always think of my friend that spent two years playing the first year of the war.

So I finally got this up and running today.  Believe it or not, I've never really played any of the scenarios except the grand campaign.  Today I decided to try the Coral Sea scenario (15 turns) just to see what it's like with a tighter focus.

I have to say that it was shockingly fun!  While the game really shines in the grand campaign, the nice tight focus of Coral Sea was far more manageable while allowing for a number of important decisions to be made.  I managed to knock it out as the U.S. in about 4 hours (fought to a draw).

I have this idea of trying to learn the editor and perhaps making my own small scenario.  The game itself has a ton of potential.  I'm not sure why more small scenarios, at least those featuring the major carrier battles, don't exist.

   It's a fun game.  Maybe too fun.  I ended up being Mengjiao because:
1) I tried to edit the Japanese into world dominance with better heavy fighters such as the "Thunderball"  a KI-43 (I think) with better everything.
as compensation the Allied player got a lot of Political points ...okay so they always won...
2) I could not find any Japanese poets that I liked as much as Late Tang Chinese (well -- MengJiao in fact)

However, I have given it up because it took way too much of my time.  HLL, World of Warships, Attila 1212 and DCS combined take about 20% as much of my time as War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition
