Swords weren't terribly good before, other than having good reach for a 1-handed weapon and being especially easy to connect with the blade (unlike axes & polearms for example).  It's damage wasn't very good and the only decent way of doing any was to spam the down-attack "stab" movement at heavy armor, or keep swinging at their face and hope to get a hit through the visor or neck armor.

From the look of it, they lowered all weapon damage (??) and also reduced armor protection.. is that right?  I've not even played the newest yet, waiting for the drastic changes to settle in because there will likely be follow-on updates.

Spears are pretty much useless for anything other than taking out mounted guys now.  Even a full wind up thrust to the back usually fails to penetrate heavy armor.

I played a bit today (buggers reset my custom class again!).  There were only about a dozen servers showing that were populated but not full.  Only two of those had a ping rate of less than 200 for me.  I live on the west coast of N. America.

I suspect you may be right about the free-to-play, pay-to-not-suck model.

That is what I thought based on what I was reading  in between the lines.  In that case, going F2P would probably be the best thing.  I've tried a bunch of F2P games and they don't have to be bad experiences (but most are  :))).  I enjoy Blacklight: Retribution, Hawken, MechWarrior Online, and Lord of the Rings Online (but LotRO can be a pain) for example.  It helps that I am a casual gamer who doesn't get overly invested in any particular game, though.  Still, F2P can be a good, especially for multiplayer games that might not otherwise get a sufficient base to make it popular.  WotR seems like the perfect candidate for that.

I thought spears were quite useless before, since they only had a 'Down' attack (the thrust).  Once your opponent realizes you're using a spear, all they have to do is repeatedly block down.

I was pretty stoked to have a couple spears to choose from, that could be used with a shield.  Until I realized this fatal flaw when using them.  It only worked on noobs who didn't realize that you could only attack one direction, and it could be easily parried without much thought.  :-[  I think it should've at least got an 'Up' attack for an overhead thrust, as in Mount & Blade, at the least.

The left, right swings were pretty useless but the overhead chop wasn't too bad.  Prior to the latest patch, spears were quite effective at taking out guys in plate with a running thrust.  They were useless in one-on-one fights, but great as a support weapon where you could dart in and stab someone in the side or back while they were tangling with someone else.  Now they can't even do that.

I use to depend on super fast side swinging with short swords.  Now the tactic does not work anymore.
I've changed to axes or mace now.

You're talking about Pole-arms.  I was specifically talking about the two spears (literally) that are available.  The ones you can only use a 'down' attack with, and no other.  Or did they change that in this last update?

Silent Disapproval Robot

I'm talking about spears.  The Boar Spear and the other one (can't remember the name).  You can swing it any way you like.  You could do that before as well, there was just no point to doing so.

Right, but even if you clicked and move right/left/up, it would still do a down 'thrust' move, no matter which way.  So, in effect, it would only do that 1 same attack move out of four, unlike every other weapon in the game.  You weren't actually attacking up/L/R even though that activated the down attack.  And all a defender had to do was block down before you hit.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Swung left and right for me when I did it.  Just never did any damage.  (pretty much like every other weapon in the game really.)

Isn't just me or are there less populated servers now?  I played a game yesterday where almost 90% of players have ping of 300+ including myself.  ;D and the ping indicated in the server browser gives strand e number 400 to 1000 ping.

I knew they were planning some sort of free content!

QuoteA free trial version of War of the Roses is also planned for release February 6, which will allow anyone to download and play the game without cost. The trial version will include access to all online battles, enabling aspiring warriors to fight alongside all existing players – paid or trial. The trial version will limit players by disallowing any unlocks, giving access only to the game's base classes and weapons, giving trial players a chance to live true knighthood.

Good!  It was the F2P weekend for Chivalry that got a purchase from me and lots of others, so maybe this will do some good for WotR as well.  Can't wait to give it a try!

Good God.

Why does this damn game redownload nearly the whole effing thing every time it updates?!  I'm about ready to just uninstall the damn thing while I'm not playing it, so that Steam isn't constantly downloading 2+GB every week or two.  >:(
