My question is what can we do back to them.  The article says we need to back up the words with actions but what sort of actions?

My suggestion would be to break the Chinese Firewall hack into the news organizations servers and download all the titillating embarrassing embezzling wealth info we can find on the Chinese leaders onto these now open sites

I started to read an article about how the NYT was hacked by the Chinese.

How to respond? I'm not so sure.

A BBC crew was detained and their video footage confiscated by the Chinese military during its investigations into a secretive cyber espionage group.

Beijing correspondent John Elsworthy was among those detained by military personnel following the publication of a report by US cyber security firm Mandiant claiming to have pinpointed the home of the cyber warfare unit at a "non-descript" complex in Shanghai.

Elsworthy and his crew were stopped "pretty promptly from filming" outside building, which was said to house one of the world's "most prolific cyber espionage groups", Unit 61398.

"We were stopped pretty promptly from filming," Elsworthy told the BBC. "We were briefly detained by the military personnel on the gates, taken inside the base and they refused to let us go until we had agreed to surrender our tape.

"The Reuters news agencies were able to pick up some footage, and you can see form those pictures that this is a pretty nondescript building.

"Certainly it doesn't look likely to be the nerve centre of one of the most effective and prolific cyber warfare operations ever mounted..."

According to Mandiant, Unit 61398 has "systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data" from at least 141 organisations around the world.

In recent weeks both the Washington Post and New York Times claim to have be subject to hacking attacks emanating from China.

In just the last week, the abbreviation APT1 has come to represent the bogeyman of digital espionage nightmares. On Monday, security response firm Mandiant released a report profiling a hacker group of that name–referring to it as Advanced Persistent Threat One–and providing detailed evidence that it represented the most active hacking unit within China's People's Liberation Army, one that's compromised more than 141 private sector and government targets in seven years, 115 of which were American.

But if APT1 is the most prolific team of hackers in the Chinese military, it's not necessarily the best. In fact, when I spoke with Richard Bejtlich, chief security officer at Mandiant and a well-known author and blogger on network security, he argued that APT1 is actually a relatively sloppy group of hackers, and that its mistakes were what part of what allowed Mandiant to profile the unit in such detail. More than a dozen more elite groups of hackers likely operate within China's military, says Bejtlich, groups that are both harder to track and harder to defend against.

I talked with Bejtlich about how APT1 measures up against other units in China's military, how groups like it can be stopped, and about the "special forces" within China's hacker corps that he says make APT1 look like amateurs. Here's an edited transcript of our conversation.
