Just read through the manual.... have not looked at the MP guide, but it appears to be perfect for MP.  The game is deeper than just recruiting and killing.... there are several factors that can relegate you ineffective.

On the Steam forum for the game one of the devs commented that their forum is simply flooded.
So it's just a ddos attack carried, unintentionally, by countless angry&hungry fans.

Tactical Orders - You can set tactical orders to your flanks, however the commander will choose the one best for the situation, but will try to favor the one you preset.   

You have 4 Flanks organized in an Army:  Left :: Center :: Right  :: Reserve

- Regular Strategy
- Delay
- Counter - Punch
- Deliberate Assault
- Hold
- Entrenched Defense
- Feint
- Refuse
- Up the Guard
